When I grow up I want to be...

Introduction

George Washington Carver grew up studying plants and nature.  He turned his interests in science, art, inventing, teaching and cooking into a life of great achievement.  Mr. Carver helped farmers learn ways to replenish the soil by growing peanut plants and found over 300 ways to use the peanut.

This webquest will help you turn your interests into future career opportunities and determine what steps you need to take to achieve that career goal.

Task

Your task:

Step 1:  take a personality test to help guide your career search

Step 2:  Visit a career website (link under process) - use your worksheet to compare 3 careers

Step 3:  Develop a brochure to share the information you have discovered

Process

1.  One of the most important but challenging decisions you will have to make is what career is right for you.  As a 6th grader, you are in a perfect position to start thinking about this topic.  Step one will help you look at your own strengths and weaknesses as well as your interests to point you in a direction.  Click here to take a personality test.  Be honest. Read the statements/questions carefully.  You will agree with the statement/question or disagree, and rate your level of agree/disagree.  There is no passing grade or failing grade - just good information for you to use.  Write down the letter code for your personality on your graphic organizer - i.e. ISTJ or ESTJ or ESFP, etc.

2.  Visit the Common Careers for Personality Types website - click on your personality type using the letter code  from the site above.  Read the description and the list of suggested careers.  Select three and enter them at the top of your graphic organizer.

3.  Visit the United Stated Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook website.   The left column is titled Occupation Groups.  Fid the one or ones that fit your suggested careers from step 2.  Use the information you find to complete the graphic organizer.  See Additional Resources below for other career information sites.

4.  Using the template, complete the Career Exploration brochure using the information from your organizer.

5.  Share your discoveries with your classmates!
