Activity 2: Science - Experiments

Activity 3: Social Studies - Culture

Activity 4: Reading - Paying attention

Process

Math Lesson:

One of the best ways to teach fractions, measurements, addition, and multiplication to young children is to bake cookies. My favorite recipe to use for teaching math through cooking is a standard chocolate chip cookie recipe; the kind that can be found on the back of any bag of chocolate chips. It is a rare child who does not love chocolate chip cookies, and making one of their favorite treats is a sure way to grab and hold their attention.

To get to the directions on how to bake the cookies copy and paste the link below in the search bar.

  Reading Lesson:

Part 1: Read

Baking cookies, cakes, and even pies is a fun pastime for many people as long as you know what you are doing. Here are a few baking tips:

  1. Read the recipe very carefully to find out if you have all of the ingredients before you start.
  2. Measure all of the ingredients carefully. Don't use guesswork.
  3. Preheat the oven to the proper temperature and make sure the oven shelves are at the correct height.
  4. Mix your ingredients properly. Don't overmix your recipe.
  5. Use a cooking timer to keep track of how long your cake or other item has been in the oven.
  6. Let your cake or other item cool according to instructions before serving it.

Part 2: Discussion

What kinds of items do people often bake within your circle of family and friends? What is one traditional food that you would bake for an international visitor to introduce him or her to your country's cuisine?

Part 3: Online Investigation

You are planning to celebrate the birthday of a close friend, and you are thinking about baking a cake. Find a recipe on the Internet for a delicious, and perhaps, unusual cake recipe. Share your recipe with a group of students and then vote on the one you would prepare.

You will be graded by completion points.

Activity 1: Math - 10 points

Activity 2: Science - 8 points

Activity 3: Social Studies - 20 points

Activity 4: Reading - 9 points

Conclusion

By now if you have completed all the activities you should know how math, science, social studies, and reading are involved with sweets. You should be able to tell me everything you did on this two day trip. After I get everyones results I will announce the winner.

Teacher Page

This is a good webquest to teach kids how to cook by using something they love. You could also use this as an extra credit asignment. These lessons teach everyday skills that students will need to know. I find that students pay attention more when they get to use what they love to help them learn.
