Introduction
by Hayden Adkins
Hello students! You have been assigned to read chapter 11 of your textbook for homework. You will be using the SCUBA method that we discussed during the beginning of the year.
Here is an overview of the method:
SCUBA is a mnemonic stategy that includes five cues for students to use when they encounter unfamiliar words in their reading.
- S - Sounding it out
- C - Checking the clues
- U - Using the main ideas and picture clues
- B - Breaking the word into parts
- A - Asking for help
Task
Read chapter 11 of your textbook, titled The Periodic Table.
Students are required to use the SCUBA method for any unfamiliar words that they encounter during the reading process. All students are required to record at least four words using the SCUBA method. If you don't find any words that are unfamilliar, which is very unlikely, then use four words that you would like to know more about.
Students will discuss some of thier words next week in class.
Good luck!
Process
Sound It Out
- Say the word to become more familiar
- This will help if you encounter the word multiple times
Check The Clues
- What words in the setnece help find the meaning?
Use Main Ideas and Pictures
- What do the heading and sub-headings reveal about the words you are reading?
- Are there any pictures that are related to the word?
Break The Word Into Parts
- Do you recognize any or the pre-fixes or suffixes?
- Is the root word familiar?
Ask For Help
- If all other steps don't work, get help
- Dictionary, parents, or fellow students
Evaluation
Students will turn in their four SCUBA words at the beginning of class next week.
We will have a class discussion on some of your words.
Conclusion
You now have your weekend assignment. If you have any questions, refere to your SCUBA handout given at the beginning of the year. Also, don't be afraid to discuss some of these words with your peers. The purpose is to become familiar with chemistry language, and the best way to learn it is to speak it!

Fellow teachers, this is a reading strategy designed to help students will unfamiliar words while reading. This strategy can be used for all content areas that involve reading. I would suggest implementing this stategy at the beginning of the year that way students can use it throughout the year.
It is very important to discuss these words after assigning the students the use the strategy. As teachers, we must be sure that they are properly using the strategy, as well as mastery the content.
