Día de los Muertos

Introduction

¡Día de los Muertos!, or Day of the Dead, originating in Mexico and found all throughout Latin America, is a widely popular celebration and tradition in the Hispanic community.  We are going to explore what this culturally rich trandition means to its celebrators, as well as its rich and unique customs and events.

Task

In order to complete this culture project, you will need to:

Get into 4 groups of 5:

Instead of each student trying to tackle this huge cultural tradition alone, we're going to break up into 4 groups, each group focusing on something different.  Group 1 will focus on the food that is prepared for this occasion, as well as what for.  Group 2 will deal with and recreate the different types of art that is created during this holiday.  Group 3 will research the history and origin of this holiday.  Finally, Group 4 will show how the deceased is remembered and honored throughout the duration of this rich holiday.

Write a report:

Don't freak out; this should not be a long, strenuous paper or process.  All I'm looking for is a 1-2 page essay telling me about your research, or your group's focus.  You may include images, as well, and do not forget to site your sources; I have attached several sources/links in the Process tab for you to utilize (feel free to use other sources not listed).

Design a presentation:

I've split the whole class up into 4 main groups for a reason: instead of each individual student completing surface-level work on all areas of this holiday, I've arranged it to where each group focuses a little deeper on their respective subject, and then presents in front of the class; this way you all learn from each other.  You may use any representational project form: PowerPoint, Prezi, or a diagram.

Here are some sites to get you started; like I said in Task, feel free to go beyond the sites that I have provided for you.  This is a huge tradition for Hispanic culture, so there will be plenty of information out there for you to find if these sites do not fulfill your ambitious hearts.

Sites:

Also, for each group, I have some questions/requirements that I am expecting to be answered/present in your reports.

Group 1 (Foods):

  • What types of foods are prepared?
  • What makes them significant to this holiday?
  • Include 2 or 3 examples (some ingredients, preparations, etc.)

Group 2 (Art):

  • What types of art/crafts are made for this event?
  • Include 2 or 3 examples of each form you find (how to make them, what they are for, etc.)

Group 3 (Origin/History):

  • Who/what/when/where/why was this holiday originated?
  • Any special facts you can include

Group 4 (Representations):

  • How do celebrators represent/honor their loved ones who have passed away?
  • What items do they use? Who is involved?

Thank you so much, students, for going through this journey with me, but most importantly with each other.  Throughout this assignment, you have learned more about a rich and unique Hispanic holiday; even if you don't completely understand it, hopefully you have acquired an appreciation for it.  It's always good to take a little break or switch gears and learn about something a little different than just classroom lectures; in this case, you all learned together, and worked together, in order to achieve more knowledge about something you may not have known about, as well as another perspective on death and family.  I'm glad you all completed this assignment so well...I think you all did a fantastic job.  ¡Feliz Día de los Muertos!
