Becoming A Leader: Canadian Government.

Introduction

As a Canadian, we enjoy many rights and freedoms. Along with those rights, we must also take responsibliity for our actions. 

This webquest is designed to develop your skills in multiple areas.

The expectation is that student will:

  • explain citizenship in terms of participation in the community, province, country.
  • demonstrate an understanding of equality and fairness in Canada with respect to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  • summarize the purposes of municipal, provincial, & federal governments.
  • gather and record a body of information from a variety of primary and secondary sources
  • use an outline to organize information into a coherent presentation

The project will also encourage and develop the following skills:

  1. Inference-making
  2. Critical thinking
  3. Observation and categorization
  4. Comparison
  5. Teamwork
  6. Compromise

Process

 

You will be assigned to a party of two or three students. Each group member will hold one of the following positions:

  • Party Leader - This person's role will be to co-ordinate the various tasks that the party has been assigned. Their role is to also ensure that all party members contribute to the final project in an equal manner
  • Party Historian - This person's role is to supervise the party members to ensure that they complete their assigned part of the written work; and then to co-ordinate the assembly of this part of the final project.
  • Party Media Person- This person's role is to supervise the party members to ensure that they assist in locating and accumulating the materials needed for the final project

Once you've decided who will complete each job, you will begin your research using the resources that are found in the Resources section to complete the various challenges listed below.

Be aware that you will need to save any information you want to use later in google drive.  Remember to copy and paste text into a google document and note where you obtained the information fromas a reference.  

Challenges

1.  Your first challenge will be to learn about the three levels of government in Canada.  To complete this first challenge you will visit one site to find out more about Canada's governments. You will find the link to this site on activity sheet #1.To go to the next slide on the web page, you need to click on the ">" under the picture. (There are 9 slides all together). Go to activity sheet #1 to find out the steps needed to complete this first challenge.

2.  Your next challenge is to discover more about Canada's main government. To complete all parts of this challenge you will need to visit different sites. You will locate the links on the activity sheet #2  where you will discover the steps needed to complete this second challenge. (View Video)

3.  Challenge #3 will be to to discover more about Parliament Hill located in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. You will be taking a virtual tour of the buildings. Go to the virtual tour activity sheet to find out more about this challenge.

4.  Challenge #4 will be to to discover more about the provincial/territorial governments of Canada. To complete this challenge you will need to visit five different sites to find out more about Canada's provincial and territorial governments. You will locate the links on the activity sheet #3  where you will discover the steps needed to complete this fifth challenge. (Powtoon) (Powtoon 2)

5.  Your next challenge will be about the local or municipal governments of Canada. To complete this challenge you will need to visit two different sites to find out more about Canada's municipal governments. You will locate the links on the activity sheet #4  where you will discover the steps needed to complete this sixth challenge. 

7.  Your second to last challenge is to discover your rights and responsibilities that you have as a citizen of Canada. You will be visiting two sites to find out what these rights and responsibilities are. You will locate the links on the activity sheet #5  where you will discover the steps needed to complete this seventh challenge.

The learning that you will do on this WebQuest will be marked out of a total of 100 marks. You will be evaluated on three different components. They are:

  1. The completion of the challenges. They will be marked on the quality of your responses to the questions. Each challenge is out of 10 marks. (Total 60 marks)
