The Road to Revolution

Introduction

"Our properties within our own territories [should not] be taxed or regulated by any power on earth but our own." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1774 Something must have happened during the life of Thomas Jefferson in order for him and other patriots to feel such strong emotion towards England and strive for freedom. During this webquest, you and your classmates will be exploring the causes of the Revolutionary War and how these events created such strong feelings against England in America.

Task

The local men are talking about five specific events. You recall hearing about: the Stamp Act, the Townshend Acts, the Tea Act, the Boston Massacre, and the Intolerable Acts. Your job is to research these events. After researching these events you will decide on a position. Will you fight with the patriots, or will you remain loyal to the King?

Process

Your final project will be a brochure that you can hand out to the other colonists to persuade them to join you in the course of action you choose to take. To keep the events current in your reader's mind, you must include a summary of five important events. Your research areas are as follows:

What was the Stamp Act?

  • What was the Stamp Act? When was it passed?
  • Why were the colonists so angry about this act?
  • Who were the Sons of Liberty? What did they to the tax collectors?
  • When was the act repealed?

Upon researching these events, you will decide on a position to take. Will you fight against the British? Or will you remain loyal to the British, and urge others toward a peaceful resolution?

IF you decide to fight against the British: In your brochure, you will summarize the 5 important events, one paragraph per event. You will then write a persuasive paragraph urging people to join up with you and fight, citing your reasons why.

IF you decide to remain loyal to the King: In your brochure, you will summarize the 5 important events, one paragraph per event. You will then think of a peaceful resolution to urge the colonists to follow. You will write a persuasive paragraph describing your plan and why it will work, urging others to join you. Research Well and Good Luck!
