RENEWABLE & NONRENEWABLE ENERGY WEBQUEST

Introduction

This WebQuest is designed for 5th grade students to help them understand energy and different energy sources.  As students work through this WebQuest, they will learn about Renewable and NonRenewable energy and how these energies affect our environment, both positively and negatively.  They will define energy and the major sources of energy currently in use.  Also, students will explore the difference between energy efficiency and energy conservation.  Upon completion of this WebQuest, students will have the opportunity to effectively apply this knowledge to their everyday lives.

Why are renewable and nonrenewable resources important? What are some examples of these types of resources? These are only some of the questions that we will find the answer to in this WebQuest.

First, let's learn what nonrenewable resources are. Then, we can learn about renewable resources and why they are important.

Ready to get started? Click on "What are nonrenewable resources?" below.

Enjoy your adventure!

Energy Basics

  1. Define energy and list 7 forms of energy.

      2.   What are 2 types of energy?

Energy Sources – first page http://www.eia.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=2

  1. What percent of U.S. energy comes from nonrenewable energy sources?

      2.  List the four categories of nonrenewable energy sources.

1.  What does it mean to say that electricity is a secondary energy source?

Zunal WebQuest:

Your task today is to first know which resources are renewable and which are nonrenewable.

You will then choose one renewable resource and one nonrenewable resource to research and include more information about.

Process

You are going to create a concept map showing what you know about resources!
1. Open up CMAP tools on your computer. Create your central theme of resources. From there, you can separate it into renewable and nonrenewable resources. 2. Include in your concept map:
  • A definition of renewable resources
  • A definition of nonrenewable resources
  • At least 3 examples of renewable resources. For one resource, include how it works, one benefit of it, and one concern about it.
  • At least 3 examples of nonrenewable resources. For one resource, include how it works, one benefit of it, and one concern about it.

3. Use the two websites on the Introduction page to find examples of renewable and non renewable resources. 4. You can also use the website listed on this page to learn more about specific examples of resources.

Conclusion

Wow! You have completed the WebQuest. In this activity, we have learned that renewable resources are resources that can be recreated or made again. Nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be made again, so once they are used up they are gone. It is important to think about where the energy for our houses and our cars comes from, because we want to be able to power them for a long time. We also want to make sure that we aren't polluting our world while we power these things. Energy and resources are everywhere in our life, and it is important to understand where they come from!

Please print out your concept map and turn it in.
