The 13 Colonies

Introduction

COME SEE WHAT THE 13 COLONIES HAS TO OFFER YOU!!!

Colonial America was a time in history that provided many new and exciting opportunities for the Europeans. People were hearing about America and were taking risks to come and settle in these new colonies. This land was divided into three colonial regions:

  • New England Colonies

  • Middle Colonies

  • Southern Colonies

People settled in these regions and specific colonies for a variety of reasons including different job opportunities, climate and geography, and freedom of region.

Task

You are a retired explorer who has made several voyages to the American colonies. Because of your experience, your expertise is needed immediately!

Several ships are preparing to set sail next year to take people from England to America. However, these people are still unsure of where to settle in the 13 colonies. They are hiring you and your exploration team to return to the colonies, thoroughly research each region, and report what you find.

You and your group will be assigned one of the following regions:

  • New England
  • Middle
  • Southern

You are to research that region and make a poster that is worthy of showing a king. Remember he is putting his trust in you since you are his expert explorers. The fate of England is dependent on your research.

The student will be able to determine the reasons for colonization and explain the role of geography is the development of each colonial region

The student will be able to examine and explain the economic, social, and political characteristics of each colonial region

Process

1. Fill in the map of the 13 Colonies. (Page 1 in the packet)

Make sure to have 3 different colored pencils

                     1. Using the image as a guide, label the 13 colonies on your map

                     2. Create a legend/map key- color in all the New England Colonies in the first color, all of the middle colonies in second color, and all of the southern colonies in the thrid color.

2. Make sure you have some headphone and watch the following video. You will watch the video twice. The first time you are just watching. The second time you will stop and jot in chart 1. Total points: ___________________

Final Webquest Project grade (out of 110 points): __________________________

Your group memebers will rate your work ethic on a scale of 1-10 and you will do the same for yourself as well the other members in your group. I will read over these evaulations and factor the scores into your grade. Be honest with these Brag Sheets...only I will read them. Completely confidential.

Conclusion

The final step is to complete the Brag Sheet.

First you will rate yourself:

I believe I deserve ______________________________ (out of 10) because…. (be honest here. If you know you were distracted in class and could have worked better do not give your self a ten out of ten. I want you to be critical about your work and participation. Reflect on maybe what you could have done differently or what you did that worked well. )

Next you will rate your group members.

Member 1: __________________________________________

I believe he/she deserves __________________________________ (out of 10) because…. (Be honest here. Only I will see this. I want to know how the members of your group did)

**YOU MUST GIVE EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE RATING AND EXPLAIN HOW THAT EVIDENCE SUPPORTS THE SCORE THEY DESERVE!!! **
