Introduction
Survival

You are in charge of special effects for a movie that is set in a newly discovered region of earth. You must come up with an animal that can live in this area. The animal must be able to survive in the habitat of this new place, so you must find out what you can about animal adaptations.
Task

Why can some animals survive in the desert and others can live in the polar regions?
Could a polar bear survive in the Sahara desert?
Could a camel live in snowy Norway?
You will be finding out about different animal adaptations that make living in these and other climates possible.
Then you will create a new animal for the new movie habitat.
Process

Find out about animal adaptations.
Animals must fulfill basic needs. All animals need oxygen, water to drink, food to eat, the abilty to find or make shelter and protect themselves and their babies, and a way to cope with the climate they live in.
Animals' adaptations, or changes and differences, can be physical (things in or on their bodies), behavioral (how they act), or interactive (what they do with plants and/or other animals in their habitat).
Go to the website below.
You will need to choose which adaptations help an animal meet one of the basic needs. This will help you think about animals in a new way. Play the game 2 or more times.
Now you are going to learn about different animal adaptations in different parts of the world. Use the animals adaptations record sheets in your folder to write down what you learn.
Go to the website below. Be patient, this site sometimes loads slowly.
- Click on the Region button at the bottom.
- Click on one of the regions on the map.
- Click on one of the animals
- You must eventually choose at least one animal from each region.
- You may choose more if you wish.
- There are buttons at the top for different types of information: creature power, food and health, home base, danger, and living creature style.
- Read the information in each section, watch the videos - if there is one- and decide what needs the various features of the animal meet.
- Write the adaptations on your record sheet.
The more you learn about different animals, the more information you will have to help you create your own animal.
For more information, go to this website:
Animal Adaptation on School Run.
This web page is divided into sections. Each section starts with an orange ribbon. You may scroll down to the About section, to read how various animals adapt to different climates.
Now you are ready to make the animal for movie.
First you must choose a habitat. Two habitats are described. Choose the habitat you want to use. Ask your teacher for the habitat background. Color the background of the habitat. You may add plants, other animals, food, and other things to the habitat before you color it, if you wish.
Once your habitat is colored, ask your teacher for the supply box. You will find various materials you can use to create your animal. You do not need to use all the materials and you may add other materials, such as paper, if you need or want to. Before beginning to create your animal, use the planning sheet to write down at least 3 adaptations you will give your animal so it can survive. There is play-doh that may be used as the main part of your animal or there is fabric and fluff so you can make a stuffed animal (use safety pins or staples to hold fabric together).
When you are finished, you will display your animal in the habitat and share it with your class.
Evaluation

Share the Animal.
You will share your animal with your classmates.
Before sharing, give your animal a name.
While you show your animal, tell the students what adaptations the animal has and how they help it survive in its habitat.
After you have shared your animal, give all of the record sheets to your teacher.
Conclusion

Your movie will be a great success now that you have created the perfect animal to star in it!!
