Introduction
We have just completed a lesson on Proportions and Percentages. We will now use this information to tackle the following problem:
November is a busy month for you! You have 4 friends with a birthday in November and you must buy each of them a present. Thankfully you can visit store websites to find any sales going on. HAPPY SHOPPING!!
Task
You will be given a budget and websites to different popular stores. You will be required to shop for birthday presents for each friend. After your shopping adventure, you will calculate:
1. Discount and Sale Price of Items
2. Amount of Sales Tax and Total Price of Items
3. Percent of Change of Items
4. Total Money Spent
5. Total Money Saved
6. Percent of Budget Spent
Process
I. Friends' Interests
In order to give your friends the perfect gift, you must do some research on your friends by completing the Friends' Interest Worksheet.
II. Budget
You have a budget of $500 to spend on your friends. You may not go over budget, so keep track of what you spend. Also -- remember you need to save money for sales tax for each item.
III. Shopping Logs
In order to keep track of all your items, you must keep a Shopping Log. The log will include the items you want to purchase, the stores where the items can be found, prices of the items, and who the items are for. You must visit the websites below. You may not purchase the same item (or type of item) more than once. You may buy more than one gift for each person, if your budget allows. You must buy at least one gift from each store. The websites are:
IV. Calculations
Before you left to go shopping, you found additional sales and discounts for each of the stores. Complete the Calculations Worksheet to determine how much you have spent after discounts, sale prices, and taxes have been applied.
V. Store Credit
Each store has a credit card that you may use to purchase the gifts. If you chose to put the merchandise from each store on the store credit card, what would you pay in simple interest if you did not pay the card off in the first month? Use the Interest Calculation Sheet in your packet to calculate simple interest if not paid off in the first month.
VI. Summary
Write a brief summary explaining if you were able to stay within your budget and what difficulties, if any, you had with calculating the discounts, sales, and tax. Explain how you use percentages in everyday life.
