You Want a What? Caring for unusual pets.

Introduction

You Want a What?

I bet you know a lot of people who have a pet. They probably have a dog, cat, bird, or fish.  A few may have a more unusual pet.

You have decided to open a pet shop that will only sell unusual pets.

You want to make sure the pets are happy.  Will people know how to take care of the pets you sell? Every animal has different needs and people who own one of the pets you sell must know what those needs are.

Task

How to Take Care of An Unusual Pet

You are going to make a Power Point presentation to show to your classmates.  Your presentation will tell them about 5 of the unusual pets you will sell in your shop.  It will also tell them how to care for these weird and wonderful animals. After your presentation, you will ask your classmates if any of them think they would be able to own and take care of any of the pets you are selling.

Process

Time to get started.

First you will need to research unusual pets. Look at the websites linked below. You will need to decide on the  five unusual pets you want to put in the presentation for your classmates.  Once you have decided on the five animals, you should begin gathering information.

Top Ten Peculiar Pets - from Animal planet. Click the green arrow to see the next slide.

Twelve Alternative Pets - there is a pink arrow on the right side of the picture to take you to next pet.

Seven Exotic Pets - just scroll down to learn about the different animals.

Small Exotic Pets - scroll to see all the information. There are just 5 animals listed here, but there is a lot of information for each one.

Use the papers in your folder to write down the name of the animals you choose and how to take care of them. You can fill these out as you research the animals.

When you have the information about the animals you are ready to make your Power Point presentation.  There is a paper in your folder that contains directions on how to do that.  If you have problems, ask your teacher or the computer lab teacher for help.

Evaluation

Presentation

  • When you are finished with your Power Point, talk to your teacher to find out when you will give your presentation to the class.
  • You should have each animal's name, some general information about what type of animal or pet it is, what kind of food it needs, what type of home it needs, and any problems that may be caused by having this pet. Make sure to include a picture of each animal.
  • After showing the Power Point, hand out the forms to all the students to see if any of them would like to own one of the pets you are going to sell in your shop.
Conclusion

Are you ready to open your pet store?

It will be a big job to learn about all the animals you sell and how their new owners need to take care of them. You have begun learning about some of the animals and you will make a great pet store proprietor!
