Introduction
Focus of the Unit of Instruction
Outline a comprehensive introduction to the GI procedures, along with the equipment employed and the set of rules and standards intended during the procedure and post-procedure period by the procedure room nurses.
Rationale for the Topic and Learner Choice
To name, describe, apply, compare, and assess the multiple processes and equipment assigned to procedure room nurses to make best use of the instrumental practices and nursing skills in the care of the patients.
Objectives
For the development of my course, I will be using the Manual of Gastrointestinal Procedures from the Society ofGastroenterology Nurses and Associates (Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc. [SGNA], 2000, p. Viii) as a valuable resource in setting-up my objectives and teaching goals as follows:
1. Identify basic anatomical procedures with which the procedure room nurses should become familiar.
2. Name standard equipment required as part of the basic balance for a setting in which GI endoscopy is
performed.
3. Assess and predict the use of accurate equipment and correct medication in emergency situations.

My name is Gloria Tello. I am originally from Colombia. I have lived in the United States since 1989. I have been blessed with a wonderful family and a rewarding career in the health care field. I enrolled into the Master's in Nursing Education, once I graduated from nursing school in 2012. Since then, I have worked as a med-surg nurse for the past 3 years. I transferred into the GI Lab 6 months ago. This new job has offered me a different way in applying and incorporating my nursing skills into a more technical way, since the procedures performed in GI require the implementation of multiple instruments. We are trained to performed as procedure and PACU nurses, which has allowed me to maintain and stay up-to-date with my nursing skills.
I am eager to complete my degree, since I only have 3 more courses left to fulfill my degree.
I look forward in learning valuable new ways of learning and applying all these fascinating technological resources into the advancement and teaching of nursing throught this didactic online course: "Orienting within the Department as a Procedure Room Nurse".
