Europeans Establish Colonies

Introduction

During the sixteenth century the Spanish created an empire by conquering and colonizing the lands in the Caribbean as well as portions of North and South America. This American empire was more than ten times larger than Spain and rich in gold and silver. European nations saw this and were eager to explore and establish colonies.

Explorers were given the task of boarding their ships with a strong crew and large supplies of food, water, and tools to embark on a journey to a New World.

You are an explorer for a country and it is your task to plan out your journey in order to expand your empire. Good luck and happy travels!

Task

You are about to embark on a journey to explore and colonize new land for your country.  You've been given the task of recording the important information about your journey to report back to the people of your sponsor country.  The people want to know why you and your crew exploring, the route of your journey and where you safely landed, and the achievements and obstacles of you and your crew. The King wants to know about the journey, if there is any trouble or not, as you will be the reason that he is able to expand the empire.

Don't let your king down!

You will spend 3 days recording your journey and findings, and prepare a brochure to give the people at home in your sponsor country.  You will create an online poster about your exploration to present to the class.

Your teacher will assign you to an Explorer and give you the handouts and graphic organizers to complete each day.  Use the websites, photos, and videos provided for you each day, based on your assigned Explorer.  Each student will complete their own brochure to turn in on Day 3.  On Day 4, you will work and create an online poster presentation on your Explorer and exploration journey to share with the class.
