The Woolly Mammoth is one of the most well known animals that is now extinct.
There are a variety of animals that are extinct today because of many reasons. Some of these animals you may have read about in a book or seen in a movie. Ice Age and 10,000 B.C. are both movies that feature animals that are extinct today.
Definitions to remember:
Extinct: A speciesor family of animals that has no living members or is no longer in existence.
Endangered: A species that is seriously at risk of extinction.
Standards Addressed:
SPI 0407.5.2 – Infer the possible reasons why a species became endangered or extinct.

The Saber Tooth Tiger is also another well known animal that is extinct today.
You are a detective. Your assignment is to find out the main causes why animals have gone or are going extinct. Remember, extinct is when a species or family of animals that has no living members or is no longer in existence.
I have gathered some articles for you to look through. You are to read through this information with your partner. While you read, you will be searching for clues or evidence within the text to help you determine why animals have become extinct. When you find a clue or some evidence, write the it down in your detective notebook so that you can look at it later.
After you and your partner have written down at least two clues in each article in your detective notebook, you and your partner will review the clues that you've found. From these clues, you and your partner will determine one main cause of the extinction of animals.

After you have selected one main reason why animals go extinct, put up you iPads or computers and go back to your seat.

Then, without your partner, take out a sheet of notebook paper and write an informative paragraph about one main reason why animals go extinct.
Once you are finished, turn in your paragraph into the first tray.
