Introduction

Identifying the theme of a story is a higher order skill and requires the reader to make an inference.
Consequently, some students have a difficult time identifying themes.
Because this skill is frequently evaluated on state reading tests, it is important that students identify themes with reasonable reliability. Properly teaching students how to identify themes goes a long way toward meeting this goal.
You will be working on this goal through today's webquest. You will be reading two different texts that have a common theme.

Do Your Best - Mrs. Matechak
Task

Today you will read two fictional stories that have a common theme.
The stories are:
- A Day on the Slopes
- Amra and the Skateboard
As you read listen for common messages both author's might
be trying to convey to the reader.
Process

You will need to do the following to complete this webquest.
1. First, go to the following website to learn more about themes in stories: http://www.calgaryacademy.com/ICT/ss/shortstory6.html
2.Read both texts.
3. Evaluate the common theme for both texts. Use inferencing to decide what common theme these two stories have. This may help you determine the theme: http://thirdgradebookworm.blogspot.com/2012/03/theme-vs-lesson.html
4. Once you believe you have identified the matching theme of these two stories, you will create a story with the same theme. You must have a beginning, middle, and end to your story. Make sure to provide enough detail to clearly develope your story and make your theme apparent.
Set up your paper like this:

5. You will create your story using Microsoft Word.
6. Save your work on the G: drive under Matechak 290. You must create your own folder to house your work.
7. When you feel your work is ready, submit your work to me by Edmodo. You will be given your unsername and class code.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated on both your ability to identify the theme of both reading passages, as well as on your writing. The rubric to evaluate your writing is as follows: (a copy will be provided to you prior to writing).

Conclusion
Congratulations!!!!
You have completed your quest. Themes are important in writing. A story without a theme is just a list of events. When you are reading or writing and notice a common message being developed remember this could be the theme. Pay attention the author may have more to share than just words and imagery!!
