Laboratory Safety

Introduction

Welcome to science class! I have great news for you: in this class, you will do much more than just READ about science: you get to DO science!

You will often do laboratory and other hands-on projects so that you can have a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. These projects are interesting, fun, and engaging. However, the science laboratory has many potential hazards that we all need to minimize or avoid altogether.

So I bet you're asking: How can we make sure we have a safe lab for everyone?

Task

Your goal in this WebQuest is to prepare yourself for working in the science laboratory. To do this, you will show that you understand potential safety hazards in the science lab, that you can work productively in a collaborative group, and that you understand important lab safety rules.

We started our Lab Safety unit by watching a scene in the classrom. We found out that we already know a little about how to be safe in the lab and that there are many things we need to learn.

First, your group will be responsible for researching potential lab safety problems and lab safety guidelines. Your group will collaboratively discuss and reflect on these safety issues.

Next, your group will be responsible for producing a brochure and a poster that summarizes key safety information. Your project will be graded based on a rubric and you will be given time in class to start and hopefully complete your assignment.

 So let's get started!
