Classics - work of superior excellence that can stand the test of time; a work for all people of all ages

Task

Work through the following links. Click on each link, and answer the appropriate question(s).

Evaluate each work based on the definition of a "classic." (judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.)

All human works should be evaluated through guidelines laid out in Scripture, so when going through the examples, check to see whether these items would be considered "true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report." (Philippians 4:8)

Medieval Music

Church music was meant to give a religious experience by creating a mystical mood. 

Gregorian chant  - lyrics in Latin, sung by monks in the Roman Catholic churches

Minstrels and Troubadours - sang ballads about the deeds of national heroes

Reformation Music

Germany produced the world's greatest musicians, but these people were also greatly influenced by Italian musicians and composers.

Evaluation

Evaluate these different art pieces and decide if there is anything questionable or inappropriate according to the Scriptural guidelines in the "task" section

Albrecht Durer (1472-1528) - woodcuts and engravings

Rembrandt - Dutch painter, greatest of all time, famous for his Bible themes in painting

Vermeer (1632-1675) - Another Dutch painter, known for landscapes and painting insides of homes

Jacques Louis David - clear, balanced, and use simple forms and bright colors

Romanticism - expression of emotion and represents exotic locations

Eugene Delocroix

Realism - focus on things that are more insignificant but ordinary; real-life experiences

Impressionists - showing ever-changing reality by emphasizing very small details of the effects of changing light.
