National Holidays
How do you and your family celebrate these holidays?
Why is one more important to you than the other?
Arizona State Standard: First Grade-Concept 3 World in Transition-Discuss the significance of national holidays:
Thanksgiving, President's Day, Martin uther King Jr. Day, Fourth of July, Consitiution Day
The objective: To introduce national holidays to students, the history of each holiday, why we honor/celebrate them and why are each important.

Task
Thanksgiving-Day 1
Learning experience: In this lesson the student will learning how Thanksgiving began, who attended, what they ate and when do we celebrate it.
President's Day-Day 2
Learning experience: In this lesson the student will learn when we celebrate, why each president is honored and how the holiday was started.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day-Day3
Learning experience: In this lesson the student will learn about Martin Luther King Jr., how his life, speech and advocacy effected America. The students will also learn parts of the famous "I have a Dream Speech"
Fourth of July-Day 4
Learning experience: In this lesson the student will learn when it was founded and when it's celebrated. The students will discuss how their families celebrate the holiday.
Constitution Day-Day 5
Learning experience: In this lesson the student will learn what the Constitution is, who wrote the Constitution and it is important.
Process
Thanksgiving-Day 1

Today we will learn about Thanksgiving. We will divide into four groups. Group 1 will research how it began, Group 2 will research who attended, Group 3 will research what they ate and Group 4 will research when we celebrate Thanksgiving. Each group will present their findings to the class through pictures, books, websites and videos
Differentiation: During the video some student may need to set closer to the SMART board, the teacher will also provide a list of words for each group to help them with their search.
President's Day-Day 2

Martin Luther King Jr. Day-Day 3
Today will are going to learn about Martin Luther King Jr. We watch a brainpop video https://youtu.be/rJTQubbS7VY that talks about his and life, speech and impact the United States. While watching the video you will complete a worksheet that goes along with the video.

Today we are going to learn what Constitution Day is and why we honor it. First we are going to learn what the constitution is and what it did for us.

Evaluation
Thanksgiving-Day 1
Assessment activities- In small groups of 2 or 3, draw a depiction of what you learned about the Thanksgiving holiday or popular scene, write a three-four sentence paragraph of the date of Thanksgiving, who attended, what they ate and what are you thankful for?
President's Day-Day 2
Assessment Activities-Identify at least 3-4 presidents
3-4 sentences of their favorite president
Martin Luther King Jr. Day-Day3
Assessment Activities: 3-4 sentences about the speech and what it means to you
Identify at least 2 effects of his speech
Fourth of July-Day 4
Assessment Activities: Identify 3 ways to celebrate the holiday
Illustrate a picture of how you celebrate
Constitution Day-Day 5
Assessment Activities: Write 3-4 sentences identifying when we celebrate the Holiday and why
Conclusion

The student should now research an unfamiliar holiday not celebrated by your family. Discover when it was founded, and when it is celebrated. Find its tradition, why it is celebrated abd who celebrates it. Answer if it is celebrated for religion, history or honor?
