Introduction
Plants and the four components they need to survive.
In order to grow plants need water, air, nutrients, and sunlight.
- The energy from sunlight is used to chemically change water and carbon dioxide (air) into sugar. This process is called photosynthesis.
- A waste product from photosynthesis is oxygen
- Water is also essential for a healthy plant cell to function.
- Plants get nutrients from the soil, nutrients are absorbed through their roots and transported through the plant’s vascular system
Task
Students will understand the four components plants need to survive
Students will create a foldable describing the four components plants need to survive
Student will use information gained from illustrations and the words in text to demonstrate understanding of the text.
Student will explain events, procedures, or concepts in a hisotrical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on information from text.

Game: Create a boundary for students to play in. It should be large enough for everyone to have space, but also small enough so that some students need to be close together. · Have some students help demonstrate how to play the game. You will throw the colored cards out at randomly inside the boundaries. When you say “go”, students will pick up 4 different colored cards: 1-yellow (sun); 1-blue (water); 1- brown (soil); 1 white (air)- without moving their feet. (Explain that since the students are plants, they cannot move). Ask students if they know what each color represents and have them share with the group. Record what each card represents on a board. · Once they’ve picked up the 4 cards, they can hold it up. If they were not able to pick up all 4 colors, they did not survive to the next round and can help you collect cards. (Make sure you have enough cards for students to survive at least the first 2 rounds). · Ask students to put their cards in their pocket to show you they are ready for the next round to begin. Continue playing until there is only 1 winner.
Students will create a foldable that will demonstrate their understnding of the plant's needs to survive
1) Student will fold paper in half
2) Student will cut top piece into four sections
3) Student will label the sections with the four components
4) Student will draw picture on flap
5) Under the flap student will give description
*Foldable should be colorful and creative

Conclusion
Review with students the 4 things plants need to grow.
Together as a class students should grow their own small plants or have a class plant that ties the lesson together. Students will get to see the concept while doing it hands on.
