Bridge Building

Introduction

Looking for a fun ideal hands on activity for your students this assignment is very fun and shows your students how to support weight and build structures. This only takes less than a week and only requires cheap supplies.

Task

You will be bulding your bridge strategically to withstand certain requirements. If it does not withstand the requirements you will not receive full credit. You will be creating your bridge with things that you wouldn't think could stand and be held down by 20 or 30 pounds.

Process

You can use popsicle sticks, dowel rods, two big hot glue sticks, steirofoam, cardboard, 3 feet of tape, wire, string and any other similar items if needed. You might find yourself using many different styles of brigdes. For example an arch where the columns that are rounded at the top and meet in the middle to keep the weight on the sides. You might use a bridge that has two right angles made by the top and the two columns. You might use the suspension brigde that might be more complicated. I would suggest the arch because it is simpler and more effective.

Evaluation

full credit if your bridge supports 25 pounds.

You will get a 90 if your bridge supports 20 pounds.

You will get a 80 if your bridge supports 15 pounds.

You will get a 70 if it only supports 10 pounds .

You can recieve extra credit for supporting 30 pounds

Conclusion

You can do this webquest in a number of ways. You might do it with an entire class, yourself or with a partner. This project is supposed to give you a since of how a structure can be built and what might be the best possible design for this assignment. I would recommend this experiment to any science class. I hope you successfully withstand the full weight with your bridge and good luck and thank you for trying this activity out.
