Description: This WebQuest is designed to educate all staff members about important information regarding communicable and chronic diseases with the potential to be in existence in the primary school setting.  

Grade Level: Adult / Primary Staff

Task

Watch the vIdeo link: 

As a group brainstorm a list of communicable disease and a spearate list of chrnoic diseases.

List any of these diseases that you have had or have seen in a primary setting. (do not include names).

Write your own definition for communicable disease and chronic chronic disease.

Your task in pairs or groups of 3 is to either:

  • create an infographic poster that can be used to inform students in the school about a communicable diseases
  • OR 
  • create an infomation factsheet about a chronic disease for staff memebers to use as an additional resource 

SOme questions to include:

  • What is the disease?
  • What causes the disease?
  • What are some of the signs and symptoms of the disease?
  • How can we limit infection and spread of the disease in a primary setting? Why is this important?
  • How is the disease treated?
  • Include other useful information and images.

Each group willl present their findings in a fiveminute presentation.

Each group is to pick a different disease to research and pressent.

Choices can include:

Evaluation

By the end of this unit you will be able to: 

 

  • Identify communicable and chronic diseases, their signs and symptoms and treatments.
  • Have a sound knowledge in prevention techniques and healthy practices to apply in the school environment.
  • Apply and promote healthy and hygienic practices in education settings. 
  • Understand when exclusion is required.

 

Assessment of these criteria will be graded from your infographic poster/information sheet and your presentation.

Conclusion

As an educator and working with children you have a responsibility to provide them with a safe, supportive and hygienic environment. 

After completing this WebQuest you will have acquired knowledge and strategies for prevention and improvement of facilities and practices in education settings.
