Flying high with research

Introduction

Welcome to the Cobartown Research Flight School!As first and second grade student pilots, you will need to earn your research wings by completing a series of activities designed to test your knowledge of the Internet, review important summarising skills and test-drive your newly acquired research abilities.

Task

In order to earn your wings, you must sucessfully complete each checkpoint in the student flight plan. After completing each checkpoint on your journey to earning your research flight wings, you will be ready to test-drive, along with a licensed professional (such as your technology teacher), your new research skills in 1st or 2nd Grade Research Class!

Process

Checkpoint #1 Preflight Information:

Student pilot can successfully navigae the National Geographic Kids: Creature Feature website and sumarise information using the 3-1-2 strategy. 

a) complete the information fact sheet on the 3-2-1 strategy

b) visit the website National Geopgraphic Kids: creature feature. Pick an article, read the article and sumarise it using the Sumarising sheet.

Checkpoint #2 Ground Training:

Student can sucessfully research using a search engine given topics using key words

A) Open up the link below and research endangered animals.

B) Use keywords to research about endangered animals and write about what you have learnt using a microsoft word document.

Checkpoint #3 Stimulator Training:

students can identify a reliable soruce of information on a webpage by identifying the headings and index pages.

A) Collect the worksheet from your teacher.

B) Open the webpage Perth Zoo, the link is below.

C) Using the headings and index navigation buttons, complete the worksheet.

Checkpoint #4 Flight with Instructor:

students can independently research, find and select a reliable internet information source and summarise information from this source using keywords.

A) See your teacher to pick a topic from the basket.

B) Sit with your teacher to show her that you can research this topic on google.

C) Find a good website to get information on that topic.

D) Talk with the teacher about what you have read.

Checkpoint # 5 solo pilot:

students can  locate a  reliable webpage using keywords on a topic. Student can summarise the information they have found on that topic.

A) You are to collect a topic from the basket.

B) Find a webpage on this topic, is it a good webpage?

C) Open a microsoft word document

D) Summarise some of the things you have found on this topic in the word document. What was something interesting you read?
