Around the World ( A webquest for Second Grade Social Studies )

Introduction

You are ready to lift off on a hot air balloon trip around the world. Your job is to learn about the large land masses that you pass over. What are these large areas of land called? How many large areas are there? What major land forms are present in each area? What countries are located on each land mass? Do you think that there is a country for every letter of the alphabet? Could our class write an alphabet book for the countries of the world? This is your mission!

Task

At the end of this project you will:

  • be able locate and label all 7 continents  and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on a world map  
  • make an oral presentation to the class about  your continent  
  • have prepared a page for our ABC Countries  of the World book  
  • make an oral presentation to the class about  your country
Process

Let's Go
First you will be assigned to a team.

1. Do your continent research.

   Team      #1 Africa  

1. Your job is to locate the continent of Africa on the world map. Locate, color, and label Africa on your paper map.

2. Read about Africa and look for information about major landforms in Africa. Make notes on those landforms. Make notes on 2 other interesting facts.

3. Prepare and practice what you want to tell the class about Africa. Be sure you show them where it is located and what landforms you found. Tell them the other interesting facts you learned.

     

4. Your assigned alphabet letters are: E, M, S, and Z. Find a country for each of these letters. Locate the country on the world map and label it. Tell these 3 facts about your country: *the continent it is on *the climate or weather *a fact of your choice *draw a picture of the flag of your country

5. Prepare your page for the ABC book. Take the facts from your research and write a paragraph about your country. When this is finished give it to Mrs. Messer to type. When you get the typed copy back, add a picture of your country's flag in the space.

6. Prepare to tell the class about your country. Show them where it is located on the world map and tell them the facts you learned.

7. Give both of your presentations for our class.

Evaluation

Participation in this Webquest will result in 3 grades:

1. An individual grade will be given on the map test. All students will be given a blank world map and asked to label the 7 continents and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

2. Individual grades will given for the completion of the ABC Countries of the World pages. This will include the oral presentation to the class.

3. A group grade will be given for the continent reports.

You should be able to locate the 7 continents and two oceans on a blank map and label them. You should also be acquainted with some of the countries of the world and where they are located.
