For HSIE this term we will be studying about other cultural groups. This term we will be learning about Bali, which is an island located in Indonesia. We hope you enjoy learning all about Bali.

Task

 

BALI

Your task is to research about Bali. You will use your findings to create an exhibit about Bali.

This exhibit must show the audience the various aspects of Bali such as it's:

  • Geography/location
  • Culture, traditions and customs
  • People and language
  • Food
  • Traditional clothing
  • Effects of tourism
  • Art, music and dance

Week 1 - Monday

  1. Colour the title page and stick it in your HSIE book.
  2. Write the heading 'GEOGRAPHY' in your HSIE book.
  3. Using atlases, maps or the following websites to find out where Bali is located. Complete the 'Where is BALI?' worksheet and glue this in your book.
  4. Read the 'Land of Bali' sheet and view the websites below and write some notes about Bali's:
    • Geography
    • Climate
    • Population
    • Economy

  1. In your groups, using the map provided to you, create a poster about what you have learnt about Bali's:
    • Geography
    • Climate
    • Population
    • Economy

Week 2 - Monday

  1. Write the heading 'PEOPLE OF BALI' in your HSIE book.
  2. Read the 'People of Bali' and 'Family Times' sheet.
  3. Visit the websites below and find some information about the people of Bali. You may like to find information on:
    • Languages - Research the languages spoken in Bali.
    • Gender responsibilities - What responsibilities do males and females have?
    • Home life
    • Balinese names - How Balinese people are named?
    • Religion - What is the main religion practised by Balinese people?

  1. In your groups, create a poster showing the beliefs and customs of Balinese people on one side, and the beliefs and customs of Australians on the other.

  3.  Write some interesting facts and information about Balinese villages and houses in your books.

Week 4 - Wednesday

    1. In your groups, create a poster. On one side of the poster draw what a typical Balinese house looks like and on the other side draw what a typical house in Australia looks like.

    1. Write the heading 'FOOD' in your HSIE book.
    2. Read the 'Foods and Feasts' sheet.
    3. Visit the websites below and find some information about Balinese food. Write this information in your books.

    Week 5 - Wednesday

    1. In your groups, create a menu for a new Balinese restaurant that will open in Glendenning. Be sure to include entrees, mains and dessert.

    Week 6 - Monday

    1. Write the heading 'TRADITIONAL CLOTHING' in your HSIE book.
    2. Read the 'Balinese Fabrics and Clothes' sheet (Be sure to read and write about the section on 'Batik'.
    3. Watch the video below and see how the Balinese tradition of Batik works. 
    4. Write some of the information you have learnt about Balinese traditional clothing in your HSIE books.

    Week 6 - Wednesday

    In your groups design new uniforms for the Glendenning Balinese Dance Group. They will need new uniforms to wear to functions that they attend. Your new uniform design must have the following:

    • male and female designs
    • use Balinese designs/prints
    • be very colourful

    TOURISM

    Week 7 - Monday

    1. Write the heading 'TOURISM' in your HSIE book.
    2. In groups, look at the travel brochure printouts provided and visit the websites below and find some information about popular tourist destinations in Bali.
    3. Choose some places you could add to your own travel brochure.

    Group Assessment

    For your group's assessment, you will be required to create a poster about what you have learnt about Bali during Term 2.

    You should work in your groups and each group member must contribute to this assignment.

    Group marks will be given AS WELL as individual marks. Your teachers will be looking at each person's individual effort to the assessment when assigning individual marks. So if you do not contribute or help much with the assignment you will get a low individual mark (even if your group get's a high group mark). A low individual mark will bring your overall mark down.
