Transition to post-secondary education and careers

Welcome to the Transition webquest!

What will you be doing after high school? Don't know? Don't worry!  You are about to start to explore your options.

This experience will help you to identify your interests and find out more information about what you want to do once you graduate high school. We will be exploring options for jobs and careers and also school and training programs that will support your interests and career goals.

There are 4 specific objectives we will be working toward and they are as follows: 

1. You will be complete a personality survey to determine your personality type.

2. You will complete a self assessment including your skills, values and interests.

3. You will be able to identify and record at least two career fields that you are interested in based on your skills values and interests.

4. You will identify at least 2 post secondary school/training programs that will help you to prepare for gainful employment in a career area of your choice.

You will...

Learn more about yourself!

To really find out more about yourself you will complete the Kersey Temperament Sorter and a self assessment. This will give you an idea of what you might like in a career and what is important to you in a job. Be honest in your answers...it is very important to the the process!

 

Learn more about careers!

Search your top two careers from your self assessment summary on the occupational outlook website and fill out the graphic organizer supplied by your teacher.This will help you organize all of the information you have and begin to see that information in a graphic representation.                                                 

 You will watch videos showcasing the two careers you are most interested in and complete the career video questionnaire. You will be able to see what the careers you are interested in look like on a daily basis and gather some information on them. 

Learn about education and training opportunities!

You will take the college majors quiz and complete the Academic Program Search. This will help you figure out what kinds of school programs you might be interested in and what programs will prepare you for the career of your choice.

Process

This process will be done with the help of your teacher/case manager. Please be sure to print summaries and reports for your portfolio. Use the checklist to help you, you will find it in the conclusion section. If you have any questions make sure to ask!

Step 1.Personality analysis

Complete the Kersey Temperament Sorter:  http://www.keirsey.com/sorter/register.aspx

This will help you determine your personality type. It is important to answer the questions based on what feels real to you and not what you think you should answer. Once you finish click the score it button and save and print the results for your portfolio. 

Step 2. Self assessment: http://www.nextsteps.ca/career/start.php?e=4

This will help you to identify  5 areas of career interests, identify 9 values that are important to you, 10 skills you would like to have or have already, and identify 5 of your character traits.Once you are done with the self assessment it will provide a list of suggested careers based on the information you provided. Review the list of suggested careers and explore those careers by clicking the title to be able to see more information. After reading about at least 5 careers that you think would interest you fill in the online worksheet, listing 5 careers in order that you are interested in. Next, complete the online values checklist for each of the 5 careers. Print the summary of for your portfolio. 

Step 3. Occupational handbook and graphic organizer:

Choose 2 of the careers from your self assessment summary report and search each of them on the occupational outlook website. Complete the hard copy graphic organizer for each career. Make sure to add the organizer to your portfolio.   

Step 4. Careers videos and questionnaire:

Complete the questionnaire as you watch the video. You can stop/pause the video and rewind to make sure you get the information you need to answer the questions. Make sure to watch 2 videos, one for each of the two top careers you are interested in. Complete a questionnaire for each video. 

Step 5. College Majors Quiz http://www.mymajors.com/

Register and complete the online quiz and view your results. For each school/program suggested, print the page called the calculated majors page. Then click the link for "request info from this school". Put the printed pages into your portfolio. 

Step 6. Post-Secondary education programs:

Academic Program Search: http://www.ctohe.org/heweb/ProgramSearch.asp

Enter the field of study you are interested in, the type of program you are interested in, delivery options and submit. Print the results of your sumbission. Review your search results and click the link to each program that looks interesting to you. Once you reach the home page navigate your way to admission information and print that page along with an admissions application. Place both the printed admission info page and applications into your portfolio.You must do this for at leasdt 2 schools/programs. 

Evaluation

Your performance will be evaluated using a rubric applied to the artifacts in your portfolio. Your portfolio will include the following components:

♦1 Personality analysis results

♦1 Self assessment summary

♦2 Occupations graphic organizer (one for each of the two careers you are most interested in)

♦2 Video questionnaires (one for each of the two careers you are most interested in)

♦College majors quiz results

♦2 Admissions information print outs (one for each of the 2 schools/programs you are most interested in)

♦2 Admissions application (one for each of the 2 schools/programs you are most interested in)

Conclusion

Your all done...for now! 

The quest for determining what your future will hold and what paths you will take in life may not be over for a long time as it can be an ongoing an constantly changing process. 

However, you are done with this web quest so congratulations. Your portfolio will stay with your case manager so that you can continue to and add to it over the following months and years. You will also be having a PPT at some point within the next year at which your transition goals will be discussed. After this project you should feel comfortable discussing your experience and your goals so don't be afraid to speak up at the meeting and contribute. 

Hopefully this experience has helped you learn a little bit more about yourself and what your future interests are. Now you can start thinking about the next steps. Talk to your case manager about your overall thoughts and feelings after revieweing your portfolio together.
