Author Study

Introduction

Welcome to the magical world of reading and writing!

In this unit you will apply skills in reading comprehension, identify components of writing, and recognize links between the author's life and the creative content.  You will get to delve into the exciting adventures of Harry Potter and get inspired to write your own fantasy story.

Task

In this unit. . .

You will participate in hands on actvities that allow you to fully analyze the literary content within Harry Potter, understand background information on JK Rowling, the author, and apply the skills gained from observation within the content and write your own story.

Process

Step 1: Select a Harry Potter book of choice, based on suggestions from the teacher to match your reading level.

Step 2: Read the book.

Step 3: Write a brief summary of the book in your journal.

Step 1: Select two characters from the book, one your favorite the second your least favorite.

Step 2: List qualities and traits of each character placing the traits in the appropriate columns of the character or the "alike" section.

Step 3: Pick one "alike" statement or two traits that cause the characters to oppose one another.

Step 4: Define the selection as the characters' relationship or the conflict.

Write a letter:

Step 1: Reflect on an event in the story that struck a chord with you.  Did it cause a reaction?  Emotional?  Mental?  Why?

Step 2: Write a letter to the characters involved in the event expressing your opinions and reactions to the event and how you would handle or change the situation.

Write your own story:

Step 1: Reflect on a personal experience that was trying or interesting (it must be a topic you are comfortable with discussing in the classroom).

Step 2: Write about the story in a creative fantasy story of your own adventure maintaining grammatical structure.
