Topics in Advanced Mathematics: Intro to Trigonometry Unit

Introduction

We are transitioning from Algebra II topics to new material, starting with our Trigonometry unit. Before we begin, there are several vocabulary terms we need to get familiar with. Before getting our hands into wonderful word problems, it is necessary to define some key terms before moving forward. I would reccommend writing these terms down in your notebook OR printing out the WebQuest material upon completion.  Get triggy with it!

Task

Your objectives for this WebQuest:

1. To research and read trigonometric vocabulary.

2. Complete the vocabulary assessment in the "evaluation" section.

3. Watch the "Gettin Triggy With It" YouTube video :)

Process

The following links contain several vocabulary terms you should become familiar with. My reccommendation would be to print out the pages to review before completing the vocabulary assessment. I will warn you, not all vocabulary terms will be in the "evaluation" section of this WebQuest. Therefore, writing down all vocabulary terms will not be necessary.

Go to the following links to discover the new trigonometric vocab:

Evaluation

Fill in the blanks with the appropriate vocabulary word.

1. ________________ is the magnitude (height) of the oscillation (wave) of a sinusoidal function.

2. The name given to any curve that can be written in the form y = Asin (B(x - C)) + D is referred to as a ________________.

3. The ________________ of a trigonometric function is the number of cycles it completes in a given interval.

4. Sine and cosine are ________________ functions. This meaning the functions oscillate and repeat a pattern of values at regular intervals.

5. A unit of measure using pi is referred to as a  ________________.

6. The  ________________ is a circle with a radius of 1 and is centered at the origin.

7.  ________________ is the study in mathematics involving cosine, sine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent functions of angle measures.

8. Two angles are said to be  ________________ if they share the same terminal sides on the unit circle.

9. The ending side of an angle is the  ________________ side of an angle.

10. An  ________________ is the line on a graph that a function nearly touches.

11. The horizontal shift of a trigonometric function is called a  ________________.

12. When an angle is at the point (1,0), (0,1), (-1,0) or (0,-1) on the unit circle, this is the  ________________.

13. The six trigonometric functions include: sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant and ________________.

14. ________________ is a helpful mnemonic device for remembering definition of the trigonometric functions sine, cosine and tangent.
