NGSS: Three Dimensions

Introduction

This webquest serves to introduce the Three Dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standard.  The dimensions are the practices, cross-cutting concepts, and the discplinary core ideas.  The objective of the lesson is to understand how the three dimensions come together to form a standard.

Task

Your task while you complete the assignment is to choose one of these roles and create a one-page arguement for it.

Roles:

1.  All three dimensions must be included in every standard.

2. The ________ (your choice) dimension is the most important and should be the main focus of each standard.

3. The Next Generation Science Standards should not include the three dimensions.

Use all available resources to support your claim and include atleast 3 sources of evidence.  (Sources can be from outside of provided materials.)

Process

Before completing your final arguement paper word process the following activities and submit them to me via email.

1. Read through the following information and for each dimension write a two sentence summary describing what each dimension contains and one level 2 or 3 Costa's question to help clarify anything you are confused about.

2. After reading through the following page complete the questions:

  1. Explain the similarities and differences between scientific inquiry and engineering practices.
  2. What is the importance of the crosscutting concepts?
  3. How are the discplinary core ideas (dci's) focused?
  4. Summarize the four domains of the dci's. (May need to click on the red provided links within the website)

3.  Comapre the NGSS dimensions to the common core math practices.  Explain which dimension you think is most closely related to the common core math practices. Why?
