First Fleet

Introduction

The First Fleet

Class brainstorm:

When did the First Fleet leave England?

When did they arrive in Botany Bay?

Why did the First Fleet travel to Australia?

Who was transported?

What were the conditions like on the ships?

The reason the Brittish came to Australia and the conditions on the boat.

Aboriginal people near the First Fleet were confused and a bit scared.

Task

Webquest:

You will be given access to a webquest which will direct you to a range of sites with information about the first fleet. The sites will include images, videos and written text.

You will be guided through the webquest with questions about things like the reasons for the British coming to Australia, the conditions on the boats, the number of ships, the captain of the fleet, etc. You will gain a deeper understanding of the First Fleet through your inquiry.

Assessment Task:

Blog:

As a final task, students will post a blog pretending to be a person (eg. captain, officer, prisoner) on the First Fleet to kidblogs.com. The students will then read and comment on one another’s’ posts about something they liked, as a form of reflection.

Process

  • What clothes did they wear?
  • What jobs did they do?
  • How would you feel being a convict on the First Fleet?

Conclusion

Concluding Thoughts:

The First Fleet marked the beginning of a very different age for Australia, including both the new arrivals and the traditional custodians of the land. At the time when the Brittish sent convicts to Australia it was very uncomfortable for passengers on the ships.

Well done researching this on the internet and completing your blog posts!

Now you have reflected on the conditions of the boats from 1788. As a final thought activity, cosider how people now travel. Also, consider how the relationships between Aboriginal people and settlers has changed over the last 230 years.
