Gold Rush

Introduction

You have been chosen to be the curator of a new Gold Museum that is being set up to let visitors learn about the history of gold in Australia.

Task

Your museum must hold exhibits that explain:

  • The properties and uses of gold
  • The history of the discovery of gold in Australia
  • Life on the goldfields, including women and the Chinese,
  • The Eureka Stockade
  • Bushrangers.
Process

You will be using PowerPoint to present your findinds.

Evaluation

Activity 1 As an introduction to your museum you need to explain the properties of gold and its uses.

Present your information as a mind map.

You need to research:

  • the properties of gold
  • how gold can be used
  • Web 2.0 tools that could be used include linoit, popplet, wordle and tagxedo.

Activity 2

Using the interactive map, create a timeline of  gold discovery in Australia.

Include discoveries from all over Australia with:

  • who discovered it
  • the place where it was discovered
  • date it was discovered.

Activity 3

Prepare a report on “Life in the Goldfields”

Your report should include:

  • The different types of mining
  • The tools used in gold mining
  • The Chinese on the goldfields
  • Women on the goldfields
  • Life on the goldfields

Web 2.0 tools that could be used include glogster edu (poster), photopeach (slideshow), flipsnack (ebook) and animoto (movie).

Activity 4

Your task is to prepare an oral presentation. Choose a character from the Eureka Stockade. Prepare a speech from the perspective of one of the characters involved. The presentation can be in the form of a speech, slideshow, movie or use of a Web 2.0 tool – it must include your voice.

Record your oral presentation describing:

  • the events that led up to the stockade.
  • your role in the events.
  • your thoughts and feelings
  • what happened as a result of the stockade.

Web 2.0 tools that could be used include voki, audacity, voicethread.

Activity 5

You are a reporter from the local “Bush News” Prepare a biographical report on a famous bushranger. Your report can be written, spoken or recorded.
