THE FASCINATION OF GEOLOGICAL LANDFORMS

Introduction

CCSS/Earth Sciences -Fourth Grade

5. Waves, wind, water, and ice shape and reshape Earth’s land surface. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know some changes in the earth are due to slow processes, such as erosion, and some changes are due to rapid processes, such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.

c. Students know moving water erodes landforms, reshaping the land by taking it away from some places and depositing it as pebbles, sand, silt, and mud in other places (weathering, transport, and deposition).

Landforms are natural features of the Earth's Surface.

Landforms are features that make up the Earth's surface. There are many kinds of landforms. They can be locations, such as islands; terrain, such as mountains or valleys; or those having specific qualities caused by climate, such as deserts, swamps, and glaciers.

Some landforms are created by the action of wind, water, and ice. This action physically changes the Earth's surface by carving and eroding land surfaces, carrying and depositing soil, sand and other debris.

Examples : a sand dune formed by wind, a river delta created by water, a plain formed by ancient lava flows.

Some landforms that we will be looking at today include:

  • Valleys
  • Plateaus
  • Mountains
  • Plains
  • Hills
  • Loess
  • Glaciers

Task

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify different landforms, giving names and descriptions of each.

You will also be able to label these features on a map.

Process

Step 1 : This slide show will give definitions of different landforms.
After the slide show, you can test yourself using the link provided. I will be able to see your results of your study jam quiz by the report being emailed to me directly.

Evaluation

For this evaluation, students will be required to answer the Multiple Choice Worksheet attached.

The second and third part of the evaluation will take the form of class projects.

You will be required to do a portfolio on landforms. You must include

  1. ·        Definition of landforms
  2. ·        Examples of landforms
  3. ·        Description of landforms
  4. ·        Pictures

For the next part, you will be required to build a model of any landform of your choice.

The guidelines and directions will be printed out in detail and handed to each student to follow.

Conclusion

Students should feel free to ask any questions they may not have asked during the presentations.

Miss Jacki will give closing remarks to the lesson.

What a fun lesson this was! I hope your child enjoyed it.

Parents, please know through this Webquest, your child was able to think critically and use the levels of Blooms Taxonomy. They accomplished this by meeting the standards in independent learning, and it also helped engage them in a wonderful activity. If you don't know much about Blooms, I welcome you to google search it on your internet.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to email me at my email on the front of this Webquest, or feel freel to call me at 310-333-3333.
