Patriotic American Symbols

Introduction

Welcome Class! This WebQuest is designed to help you to learn all about American Symbols and why they are very important to us. These symbols represent the love we have for our country. During this WebQuest we will ask ourselves a few questions; Why did our country's leaders choose these symbols? Why are they still important to our country? How did these symbols get choosen? These questions may have never crossed your mind before, but by the end of this WebQuest you will even be able to teach a classmate about these very important Patriotic American Symbols.

 

Task

As we are leaning we will discover that America is made up of so many different symbols. Each of you will have the task to come up with a symbol of your own with a explaination to why you choose the symbol. Before we do that, we will take each day to learn more about the different Patriotic American Symbols. Why are these symbols so important? What makes other countries think of America when seeing these symbols? This week you job will be learn all about these symbols and then teach your groups about these symbols. at the end of this week you and your group will then pick your own symbol.

Process

Day One: First you will need to learn all about America's Patriotic Symbols. You will need to do this by visiting these sites below.

Day two: Today you will need to use your journal to write or draw three of your favorite American Patriotic Symbols.

This Weeks Vocabulary:

American Flag- The national flag of the United States of America.

Patriotic- Having and expressing devotion to; showing support for one's country.

Symbol- A thing that represents and stands for something.

Allegiance – devotion or loyalty. 

Liberty Bell- a bell in Philadelphia first rung on July 8, 1776, to celebrate the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. 

Day three: Today you will Present those three favorites to the class and explain why you chose them to be your favorite. Make sure to give a full explaination. When everyone in the class is complete, Please click on the site below and complete at least two puzzles.

Day four: With your groups, come up with a symbol that you would use to decribe you all as a group. Using Poster board, markers, glue, pictures, glitter, and all supplies given by your teacher, come up with a presentation.

Day five: PRESENTATION DAY!!! As a group explain why you all have choosen your symbol. Explain the design and graphics on your poster. Be very Creative and HAVE FUN!

Worked well with group, providing ideas

All paricipants worked together to create project equally. Participants worked together most of the time but had some issues.  Participants had many disagreements and/ or did not try to work together.

Project was colorful and provided great

detail. 

Project exceeded expectation of teacher. Vibrant in color with great detail. 

Project was sufficiant but lacked in color and detail. Project was not complete and did not meet criteria.

Participated in presentation of group

symbol. Provided great insight to why

the symbol was chosen. 

All participants participated in presentation of the group project. Took turns speaking and adding to the presentation. Most participants participated but not all, presentation was not full and short. Only two or less presented project. Did not give full detail of project. 
Turned in group project on a timely manner. Project turned in ontime or early. Project on time but was not complete. Project was turn in late.
Conclusion

You have completed five days full of fun information on our nations Patriotic Symbols. You now know alot about America's symbols that help to resprest us to other countries.

This WebQuest was designed for First Grade students and is on the Patriotic American Symbols. This lesson involves cooperation, interaction with groups, and composition. 

For Example:

*Ask students to review vocabulary and discuss words.

*Ask students to come up with a group symbol.

*Require a group presentation.

This lesson really gives a good overview of the many symbols our country has and their meaning.
