Fractions are FUN! :D

Introduction

WELCOME!!

Welcome to your Webquest on fractions. Throughout this WebQuest you will be paticipating in some online mini-lessons designed to help you to understand 3 different aspects of fractions. Make sure you read the content carefully and go back over anything you might have missed or didn't quite understand.

When you are ready you can begin by clicking to the next page, 'Task'.

Task

While completing this WebQuest your tasks will include the following...

  1. The first task is an introduction to fractions and what they are
  2. The second task is learning about 'proper' and 'improper' fractions
  3. The third task is learning about equivalent fractions

Learning Goals:

Throughout this WebQuest you will have learning goals that you will aiming to achieve. Today those are:

  1. Knowing what a fraction is and being able to define it
  2. Being able to define a 'proper' and an 'improper' fraction
  3. Being able to identify some equivalent fractions, and understanding why they are equivalent

You can now start your 'Process'

Process

Click here to begin your first task as an introduction to fractions

  1. Make sure you read ALL OF THE CONTENT. It is important to re-read over parts that you are unsure of.
  2. Complete the activitites on the page and make sure you get them right before moving on.

Click here to begin your second task on proper and improper fractions

  1. Make sure you are reading ALL of the content and are re-reading over sections you don't quite understand
  2. Make sure you take notice of the definitions of 'proper' and 'improper' fractions
  3. Complete all of the activities on the oage and make sure you get them right before moving on.

Click here to begin your third, and final task on equivalent fractions

  1. Once again make sure you are reading ALL of the content
  2. Only read up to the 6th example
  3. Complete all of the activities on the oage and make sure you get them right before moving on.

Now you can skip to the 'Evaluation' step

Evaluation

Now that you have finished your mini lessons you can download and print off this pdf and complete this task in test conditions. Once finished your teacher will mark how you went.

Once you have completed your task you can go to the 'Conclusion'.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed your mini lessons and have finished your final task for this WebQuest! I hope you got 100%! You can now identify and understand fractions. You know about proper and improper fractions and the differences between them, and you know what equivalent fractions are! You are a Fractions Freak!

Teacher Page

For this WebQuest the focus from the Australian curriculum (ACARA) will be at a level 4 and will be focused on fractions.

The level 4 descriptor says that at this level:

Understanding includes making connections between representations of numbers, partitioning and combining numbers flexibly, extending place value to decimals, using appropriate language to communicate times, and describing properties of symmetrical shapes

Fluency includes recalling multiplication tables, communicating sequences of simple fractions, using instruments to measure accurately, creating patterns with shapes and their transformations, and collecting and recording data

Problem Solving includes formulating, modelling and recording authentic situations involving operations, comparing large numbers with each other, comparing time durations, and using properties of numbers to continue patterns

Reasoning includes using generalising from number properties and results of calculations, deriving strategies for unfamiliar multiplication and division tasks, comparing angles, communicating information using graphical displays and evaluating the appropriateness of different displays

The year 4 content descriptor says that students will investigate equivalent fractions used in contexts.
