Introduction
Some poeple don't know how to subtract fractions. Especially when you dont even know what a fraction is. A fraction is a part of a number. Half of one is 1/2, a quarter of one is 1/4, a third of one is 1/3 and so on.
Task
My task for you is to make you know how to subtract fractions.
Process
Things you'll need
- your favorite Chocolate Bar
- A small knife
- A very clean surface
To pass you will need to follow the following:
Open your chocolate bar and set it one your clean surface. The whole chovolate bar equals 1. Cut your chocolate bar into three equal pieces. Now your chocolate bar is 3/3. 3/3=1. Now go ahead and eat one third. You just subtracted 1/3 from 3/3 {1/3-3/3}. What do you have left out of the chocolate bar? 2/3. Why two thirds? 2/3 because you cut the bar in three equal parts and you ate one piece so you have 2 pieces left from your whole (1) (3/3). What you just did was you did this math equation which is 1/3-3/3=2/3.
Want more chocolate? Go ahead and eat another third of your chocolate bar. Go on, eat. Now you just made another equation. Since you already had 1/3 of your 3/3 and just now you ate another piece it makes the 1/3 into 2/3 because you ate two pieces of chocolate. 2/3-3/3=1/3. Now you have one piece of chocolate. (Well, you should... but if you ate the last piece of chocolate it's fine.) If you didn't eat that last piece of chocolate eat it... NOW! Since you just had 3 pieces of chocolate (the whole thing) you just made another math equatation. 3/3-3/3. What do you have left of the chocolate? Nothing... therefor your answer is 0 (kinda obvious but just for teaching puposes) Now that you have eaten your chocolate in a very educational way, you know something new... YOU KNOW HOW TO SUBTRACT FRACTIONS! YAY?! (umm... yes yay)
Next time you eat another chocolate bar devide your bar into smaller, equal parts. Do the same thing you just did right now and you just learned subtracting fractions but with a bigger amount of pieces. :)
Evaluation
The scoring rubric will be based on a scale of 1 to 3. 1 being you didnt get it at all. 3 being you did not get anything confused and learned something new.
If you ate the whole chocolate bar without getting confused you'll get a 3.
If you only ate 2/3 of the chocolate bar without getting confused you get a 2.
If you ate 1/3 and didn't get anything you get a 1.
Conclusion
CONGRATS! YOU JUST LEARNED SOMETHING NEW!
I hope you enjoyed eating your chocolate bar in a new way. You now know how to subtract fractions.
