Creating Movie Camera Effects Using Properties of a Circle/Sphere

Introduction

You just got a job in Village Roadshow Pictures as one of their new additions to the film crew, in which you have been asked to complete a few tasks for their newest release "The Matrix". Some of the tasks on this job will require special camera effects in which you will use the properties of circles and/or spheres. I hope you payed attention in geometry!

Task

This assignment is compatible for small groups, and you can even work individually if youd like. (Each person can do a separate task if needed). This assigment will be completed in a maximum of three days.

So what is it exactly that you will be doing?

In some film industries, depending on the type of movie and scene, some camera effects are required. For this assignment you will need to figure out how to complete the scene the director is giving you. All of the instructions will be listed on the sheet you are given.

Process

Now. Let us begin with the information given on this event.

These are the lists of scenes you have been given to figure out:

*answer to the nearest tenth.*

1. "Dodging Bullets"

2. "Highway Fight Scene"

3. "Wake Up after Death"

Cirfumference and Arc Measurement:

For scene 1, "Dodging Bullets", the director hands you a sheet of paper with the measurements of the space being used for the scene. Find the circumference of each circle, and the length of the wanted space. The arc of the bigger circle (in regards to their circumference) measures 47 degrees, and the smaller circles arc 23 degrees. Please show all work

Area of a Circle:

For scene 2, "Highway Fight Scene" you are given this sheet of paper by the director. You are asked to figure out the area needed for highway space. Find the area of both circles, and the area of the space wanted. Please show all work.

Volume of a Sphere:

For the last scene, "Wake Up after Death", a certain amount of slime is needed. You are given the sheet below in order to figure out this information. Again, please show all work. **Leave this one in terms of pi, ITS STILL GOING TO BE A BIG NUMBER, DONT FREAK OUT**

Conclusion

As you can see, the properties of circles can actually be used in real life! I bet you didnt expect it to be used in this way, and I hope this gives you a better understanding of this math concept and even a better reason to pay attention in your math classes. There are numerous other ways you can apply these concepts in real life, so dont just learn and burn!

Hello! My name is Catherine and Im in 10th grade, Honors Geometry. In this class we were asked to create a webquest using any of the concepts of math we had learned over the course of the class. As you can tell, I picked "Properties of Cirlces/Spheres". The reason for this decision was because I felt I had a good understanding of this concept and that it would be reatively simple to convert into a real life situation. Now, why The Matrix? Well, in my research to find a way to make a real life situation, I came across a website explaining how The Matrix movie had actually used the properties of circles for one of their scenes. So having seen that, I created my own little "scenes" in which you had to use these properties, and I think it turned out pretty good! I am proud of my work and think this shows my understanding of the project very well.

Permissions:

I think this would be a great way to further educate people in their journey to learning geometry. So I do give permission for this WebQuest to be modified, for educational purposes, as long as the creator is credited :) Have fun!
