Right triangle houses.

Introduction

You are officially a construction worker! In this WebQuest you will be learning about the formulas and finding the lengths of special right triangles. This is an individual assignment!

Task

Create a blue print for the houses you will be building. (You will need graph paper for this!) These must show precise measurements of the lengths. You must design at least five houses with special right triangles in them.

Process

You have three days to finish this by yourself.

Step one – Design your house. You must make the blue print of two square houses and three rectangular houses on graph paper. give only one side for each model. (one model with a hypotenuse length, one model with the longer side's length, ect.) Each model should have a different length from the rest! (After you are finished you should have five models with different side lengths and different starting sides.)

Step two – Give your houses a diagonal. This is now the hypotenuse of your special right triangle. Be sure you only have one starting side length for each model!

Step three – Find the lengths of the missing sides of your new special right triangles. Use the formulas to help you with this part. Show all of your work and explain each problem in detail. (Remember, all of this must be precise!)

Step four – Now, create a short presentation on what you learned (on paper), include examples and detailed explanations. Pretend you are teaching a class that has never heard of this before.

Evaluation

Explanation

Explanation is detailed and clear with multiple examples and shows complete understanding of the topic.

Explanation is clear with at least one example and shows complete understanding of the topic.

Explanation is a little difficult to understand, but includes a subtle understanding to the topic.

Explanation is difficult to understand and is missing several components OR was not included.

Diagrams and Sketches

Diagrams and/or sketches are clear with correct measurements and greatly add to the reader\'s understanding of the procedure(s).

Diagrams and/or sketches are clear and easy to understand with correct measurements.

Diagrams and/or sketches are somewhat difficult to understand.

Diagrams and/or sketches are difficult to understand or are not used.

Completion

All problems were completed and has many examples.

All problems were completed.

Mostly finished, missing details and/or examples.

Problems are not completely solved and/or does not include presentation.

Neatness and Organization

The work is presented in a neat, clear, organized fashion that is easy to read.

The work is presented in a neat and organized fashion that is usually easy to read.

The work is presented in an organized fashion but may be hard to read at times.

The work appears sloppy and unorganized. It is hard to know what information goes together.

Conclusion

Your final task is to evaluate yourself with the chart included. Try to be as honest as possible and follow the chart completely.

Credits

Why did you make this WebQuest? - I made this WebQuest because I knew that I'm not the best at special right triangles. I know that sounds weird because most kids just choose the topic that is the easiest for them, but I decided to challenge myself not only to see if I could make it, but also to learn more about the topic for a better understanding.
