Introduction
Muscular System
"The Power System"

The muscles in your body keep your gut from sagging and your lungs pounding. In addition, muscles are what make us move and makes heat to keep the body warm. If you leap, try to go to sleep, or reach, it is a result of a skeletal muscle action. We are going to take a trip through your body, investigating the different types of skeletal muscles, and how they help our body to function properly. The muscles in your body provide the forces that enable the body to move. Muscles stretch across joints to link one bone with another bone and work in groups to respond to nerve impusles.
Task

The Muscular System in the body is composed of muscle cells and tissues that bring about movement of an orgran or body part. There are approximately 650 different muscles in the human body. The muscular system helps the skeletal system give our bodies its shape and form. There are 3 different types of muscles in the human body: smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscle. Some of the muscles in our body work without us even thinking about them, these muscles are known as involuntary muscles. The muscles in our body that we control and need to be told when to move are known as voluntary muscles.
Process
The Muscular System is very complex. You are going to use the internet to investigate the Muscular System and answer the questions below. If you are having trouble finding information please check the Teacher's Page for some helpful links. Be sure to include the website that you find your information on with each answer.
Task 1:
In complete sentences, identify and explain 3 functions of the muscular system.
Task 2:
In complete sentences, identify and explain the 3 different types of muscles. Be sure to include whether or not the muscle is voluntary or involuntary.
Task 3:
List the 2 main types of muscles fibers and then the 2 subcatagories of the one type and what is the function of each. (4 types in total)
Task 4:
In complete sentences and in your OWN words, please explain the entire process of how of how muscle movement occurs from start to finish.
Task 5:
Label the 11 basic muscles on the Bones & Muscles For Life worksheet
Evaluation
Students will be graded on the following criteria:
Task 1: 3 function of Muscular System 15 points
Task 2: 3 types of muscles 15 points
Task 3: Voluntary/Involuntary Muscles 20 points
Task 4: Muscle Strain 10 points
Task 5: Muscle Cramp 10 points
Task 6: Muscular Dystrophy 10 points
Task 7: Labeling Diagram 20 points
Conclusion
The muscular system is an important part of the human body. It helps us move, helps to protect organs, cardiac muscles pumps blood, helps with digestion, and ensures that blood flows through our bodies. Now that you have completed the webquest you should be able to differentiate between the 3 muscle types, smooth, skeletal, and cardiac, and be able to identify if a muscle is volunary or involuntary. The human body also has different types of muscles. Muscles are classified as either Type I slow twitch and Type II fast twitch, fast twitch muscles are further broken down into Type IIa and Type IIb fibers. Finally, you should now be able to label the 11 basic muscles of the human anatomy. These muscles include: deltoids, pectorals, trapezius, latissimus dorsi, biceps, triceps, gluteus maximus, hamstring, quadriceps, gastrocnemius, and abdominals.
