Introduction

There are many elements of Romanticism that are portrayed through Emily Dickinson's famous poems. She uses Individual Freedom is Important, Nature is the Way to Find God and Most Settings Are in Exotic Locales or the Supernatural.

Task

You will be researching Emily Dickinson's "Success" and finding elements or parts of elements of Romanticism she uses throughout this poem.

 

1. What word in the first stanza represents some form of nature?

2. What is the author's tone throughout the poem?

3. What element can be identified with "Who took the flag to-day

                                                          Can tell the definition,

                                                          So clear, of victory"?

4. Why does Dickinson use the color purple when describing success? What does this symbolize?

5. What message is the author trying to convey to the audience?

 

Process

Go onto www.google.com and search: "Nature" is What We See by Emily Dickinson. take the time to read and annotate the poem, then answer the following questions.

 

1. How does Dickinson use the element Nature is the Way to Find God in this piece?

2. What is Dickinson's purpose behind using dashes? What do they represent?

3. Why are some words in the middle of sentences capitalized and others not?

4. Write a one page essay on your understanding of the elements of Romanticism. Be sure to include quotes from Dickinson's poems to support your understanding.

Conclusion

Emily Dickinson was, and still is a very famous romantic. Her poems will continue to be analyzed by students thoughout the years. She is a key poet from times of Romanticism and definitely made a name for herself while she was on this Earth. By taking the time to research her work, I have learned not only about Romanticism, but the art of poetry and how powerful it can truly be.
