Introduction
Thanksgiving is a very misunderstood holiday. In this lesson we are going to learn the importance of Thanksgiving and why we celebrate it. We are also going to learn what the first Thanksgiving was, and how it has changed throughout the year.
Task
At the end of this lesson you will know how Thanksgiving has developed over the years and why we do what we do on Thanksgiving.
Process
First you will learn about the first Thanksgiving which the English colonists we call Pilgrims celebrated days of thanksgiving as a part of their religion, but these were days of prayer, not days of feasting. Our national holiday really stems from the feast held in the autumn of 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag to celebrate the colonies successful harvest.
On September 28,1863 which was during the Civil War, Sarah Hale sends a letter to President Abraham Lincoln asking him to proclaim a national Thanksgiving day. She has been trying for 17 years to make it a national holiday.
October 3, 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaims Thanksgiving on the last day in Novmeber.
1920: Gimbrel Brothers Department store was sponsors the first Thanksgiving day parade. Which was held in the streets of Philadelphia.
Thanksgiving Day, 1924: The first annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade was held in New York City.
1941: President Roosevelt signs legislation to reestablish Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday od November, but it does not take effect until 1942.
Thanksgiving Eve, 1947: President Truman pardons a turkey that is marked for Thanksgiving dinner in the White House. This becomes an annual White House Tradition.
Thanksgiving Day: 1956: The first television broadcast of the Thanksgiving Day football game.
