Introduction
This webquest provides students with the opportunity to continue in their mock roles in the company behind the Condensolizer. Having now completed their work in identifying two potential target cities students will take on the role of the business side of the equation and determine which city is the more profitable choice.
Task
In thinking about the economics behind the decision to market a problem students must look at several pieces of data to make their decision.
These include by are not limited to the potential size of the market, potential demand, population demographics, and distribution costs. Students will weigh all of these factors before making their determination as to which city is the best candidate for expansion and defend that decision to their peers.
Process
1. Review these Basic Economic Concepts
2. Collect data on the two selected cities beyond what has been provided by the site research team. Focus in particular on:
- GDP
- Total Population
- Per Capita GDP
- Wealth Distribution
3. Consider the following factors:
- Countries with less water will have a greater demand for a supplementary water supply, such as your product.
- If the product is manufactured in Dayton, Ohio and costs $.80/mile per shipment, what are the shipping costs?
- Deduct $1000 from the shipping costs if the city is a major seaport or near one.
- Deduct $425 for a city in Europe to represent advanced infrastructure.
- Deduct $550 if the middle eastern city is located in a relatively secure country (ie. Qatar, Kuwait, UAE
4. Weighing the potential size of the market and demand versus the costs of shipping, which city will your team choose?
5. Prepare a short presentation for the class justifying your decision.
