Writing to argue/persuade: AFOREST rhetorical devices

Introduction

Learning Goal:

Using the language of explain and describe, IWBAT identify, define and create examples of AFOREST persuasive devices necessary in argumentative writing by completing a webquest in pairs

Task

In pairs, you will navigate through 10 different persuasive language devices used in argumentative writing. The mnemonic we will use to refer to these literary devices is: AFOREST.

For each device, you will be asked to define, identify examples and create examples of your own.

Task 1: Define and give examples

Look through the websites below. Define and provide 2 examples of each of the 10 persuasive devices.

If you are unable to find some persuasive devices, you may look at dictionary.com or ask your teacher.

Task 2: Identification

You will now have the chance to examine and annotate different examples of persuasive texts. The Texts range from speeches, letters, brochures, posters and print adverts. For each, you must identify AFOREST persuasive devices and explain how you knew (justification).

Task 3:Create (choose option A or option B)

Option A:

Create a one page digital or hand drawn print advert for a product of your choosing. The product  should include a catchy slogan, 1-3 images, a 25 word blurb that explains the product (5 Ws).

The steps are as follows:

1.) Select or makeup a product (candy, soda, car, shoe, bag, robot, perfume, etc.)

2.) Identify a minimum of 3 persuasive devices you wish to use in your advert

3.) Create the one page advert. Refer to the example advert with labels. The example is titled: advert labels and example and is located on our class page

Option B:

Create one example of each persuasive device. You will have a total of 10 different devices. 


Evaluation

Task 1: Define and give examples

Task 1 is on a 2 point scale. For each defintion and example you may be awarded between 1-2 points. 

2 points -Defintions are well phrased and in your own words. Defintions are clear, complete and correct. You include at least two examples for each persuasive device

1 point- Defintions are mostly in your own words but are slightly confusing, unclear  or incomplete.You include at least one example for each persuasive device.

0- Defintions were copied from the webpage and no effort was made to put them into your own words. No examples were provided or examples were incorrect.

Task 2: Identification of persuasive devices

Task 2 is on a 2 point scale. For the print adverts, you must identify at least two persuasive devices per advert. For the texts, you must identify a minimum of 10 persuasive devices and 5 of them must be different. In other words, you cannot identify the same device over and over.

2 points - You met or exceeded the minimum amount of persuasive devices identified by highlighting and labeling.

Task 3: Create a print advert

Print adverts are on a 5 point scale. Print adverts must be advertised by your monster, must include a product with a brand name, must include a minimum of 3 persuasive devices, must include a catchy slogan, must include at least 1 image and must include a 25 word blurb that informs the audience on the product. 

5 points- Print adverts meet or exceed the criteria; image/s are thoughtful and imaginative; slogan and blurb include a minimum of 3 persuasive devices that are accurate and unique

4 points- Print adverts meet most of the criteria; image/s are somewhat thoughtful and imaginative; slogan and blurb include a minimum of 2 persuasive devices that are accurately used; a few mistakes but nothing glaring 

3 PointsPrint adverts meet some of the criteria; image/s are somewhat thoughtful and imaginative; slogan and blurb include a minimum of 1-2 persuasive devices that are mostly accurate; mistakes are common  and meaning can be lost

2 Points- Print adverts meet few aspects of the criteria; image/s are messy and show lack of effort; slogan and blurb include 1 persuasive device but it is confusing and hard to understand; mistakes are common  and distort meaning

1 Point- Print adverts meet little to none of the criteria; image/s are messy, not complete and show lack of effort; slogan and blurb include  1 persuasive device but it is confusing and hard to understand; mistakes are many
