Ancient Egypt

Introduction

Welcome!

You are about to embark on a journey which will take you to Ancient Egypt. You will experience what society and lifestyle was like thousands of years ago. Have you ever wondered how Ancient Egyptians communicated, what did they do without cell phones or Canada Post? What kind of homes did they live in? How did they manage without electricity and washing machines? Why did they mummify their dead? How did they do it?

Task

For this project our class will create a time capusle. Each group will contribute an artifact which will be placed in the time capsule.

Wondering what a time capsule is? According to Dictonary.com , a time capsule is a container holding articles, documents, etc, representative of the current age, buried in the earth or in the foundations of a new building for discover in the future.

Wondering what an artifact is? An artifact is defined by Dictionary.com as "any object made by human beings, especially with a view to subsequent use" (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/artifact

In groups of 2 or 3,  transport yourself back to ancient Egypt to create an artifact which represents a part of Ancient Egypt's society such how they communicated, their lifestyle or the amazing mummifcation process.

But first, you must do some research. Along the way, you will complete three tasks about Egyptian lifestyle, communication and mummies.

Process

Introduction

This webquest starts with a must watch video. Then there are three areas which you will need to find explore and learn about.

Begin here by watching this video to learn a little about ancient Egypt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdtgX9ORiW4

Communication

Take a moment to think about how you communicate with your teachers, friends and family? You can talk, write, type, draw pictures and make gestures to express yourself and your ideas. What kind of tools do you use? You use pencils, crayons, and paper. You also use devices, like computers, smart phones, and tablets.

In Ancient Egypt, there were no tablets, no smart phones and no computers with printers.

So how did ancient Egyptians communicate?

In this section, use the websites to find the answers to these questions: **Remember to record your answers**

Lifestyles

Select an organizer to help you keep track of the wealth of knowledge you are about to collect.

Once you have your organizer printed off, visit here and here to learn about the daily life of an egyptian. You'll notice it is a lot different then your lifestyle today. Write down what you discover on the organizer.

Next, get your museum pass ready to admire some remarkable paintings. As you wander though the exhiits pay close attention to the style of paintings. It will help you create an artifact later.

Mummies

In this portion of the web quest you will visit one or all of the websites listed to answer these questions, please see your teacher for your recording sheet:

  • What are mummies?
  • How were mummies made?
  • Why did the Egyptians mummify their dead?

On this site there are several videos, the first is quite long but takes you step by step through the ancient mummification process but in modern day with Egyptologist Robert Brier.

Your artifact should reflect what you have learned about either Egyptian communication, homes or mummies. Examples of artifacts could be a message in hieroglyphics, a home, a painting, a sarcophagus. Do not let these examples limit your imagination, be as creative as you would like!
