ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

Introduction

Addition-SubtractionDay 5 Equations Using Addition and SubtractionDay 5 Equations Using Addition and Subtraction

Many parents feel rather confident in teaching their child early mathematics skills such as the basics of number recognition, one to one correspondence in counting, sorting activities, and knowledge of shapes.  But what about addition and subtraction?  I once taught with a teacher who frequently complained about the difficulties of addition and subtraction for her third graders, stating that those concepts were introduced far too early in their schooling.  While I do not doubt that third graders struggle with addition and subtraction (some of my students certainly did), I also do believe that exposure to such skills begins at a very young age, even as young an preschool, before children may even have mastered one to one correspondence, and this exposure can influence enthusiasm and ease of learning as children get older. Here our  created webquest to remedy those problems.

In this webquest, you will become addition and subtraction experts! We have been working on story problems dealing with money and a bit harder addition and subtraction work lately. Now we want to expand your minds and help you to figure out why these basic addition and subtraction facts work and we also want you to be able to use them throughout your lives. You will see that addition and subtraction are very important and you will use it everyday outside of the classroom.

Task

TASK 1

We all want to buy gift for our friends and families for this coming Chrismas. Of course this costs money so we need to figure out how much money we need for each gift that we want to buy. I want all of you to make a list of people you want to buy for. I will give all of you a specific amount of money that you can spend total for everyone that you buy for. You will then go to stores or go on store websites to find things you want to buy for each person. You will add the prices up as you go along. If you go over the amount I give you, you must subtract the items that make you go over the limit and find something that is less money. Try to buy as many things as possible for the people on your list and get as close to the limit of money as you can. You will then be making a holiday present budget chart. This will consist of all the people you want to buy for, the items you are buying, how many of the items, and the costs with a grand total. You will then create a story problem using addition and subtraction. Use the things you have learning from making your holiday present budget chart. You will then put it on a posterboard with the answer and present it to the class. This will show the class and myself what you have learned. Be creative and make it colorful!

TASK 2

You will then define the addition and substraction and make your own example over the whole class.

Process

TASK 1

STEP 1

  • keep track of what you want to buy and the prices as you go along. Write the items and the prices down as you go on a separate list to turn in to me.

STEP 2

  • If you are more than 350 pesos, keep finding items.

STEP 3

  • If you are more than 350 pesos over you will need to subtract some items from your list.
  • Write all of the addition and subtraction out on your Items and Prices list. I do not care if the list looks a bit unorganized and things are crossed out. I just want to see your work.

Step 4

  • Once you are 350 pesos under  or over your limit, make your Holiday Present Budget Chart. Again your chart should include: 1. The names of the people you are buying for 2. The items you are buying 3. How many of each item 4. how much they cost 5. The grand total Step 5 Lastly, you will use what you have learned to create a story problem. You will use your holiday present budget chart to create this story problem. Use the information you have learned. Be creative! There are many ways to do this story problem.

STEP 5

  • You will write this story problem on a poster board, solve it on the poster board, and bring it into class to present to your classmates and myself. You will read your story problem, explain how you solved it, and tell us one thing you learned about doing this assignment. Make the poster board colorful and fun!

TASK 2

STEP 1

  • After the teacher discuss the addition and subtraction you will define addution and subtraction in your  own words.

STEP 2

  • Then you will give an examples.

This webquest is a fourth grade addition and subtraction webquest. They are given a certain amount of money to buy presents for friends and family during the holidays. They will be making lists, a chart with their work and data, and then create a story problem on a poster board showing what they have learned. And also learned how to subtract and add igits.
