Pathways Through Human Anatomy and Physiology

Introduction

While the human body functions as a single unit, it is comprised of many different organ systems that carry out different functions within the body.  However, all of these organs form an organ system which serves to carry out specific processes.  It is time to stop viewing the organs of the body as individual and seperate parts, and instead view them as a team of cells that are carrying out specific functions that allow us to exist!

Task

At this point in time, students should be familiar with the main organs and blood vessels within the body and their functions.

The following objectives will need to be completed
1. Make sure that your notebook contains the material covered in class.
2.  Work with peers to complete pathway assignment on poster board or powerpoint -  your choice.
3. Present pathway to the rest of the class via 3-5 minute presentation.

Process

The class will be divided into 8 groups, and each group will be assigned a pathway. Students will need to work cooperatively as a group and then present their assigned pathway to the class.

Group 1 & 2 - Circulatory System.

1. Define the major organs and vessels in the circulaory system.
2. When a drop of blood leaves the heart, and takes oxygen to the big toe of the left foot, describe the pathway that the drop of blood will need to take.
3.  Use this link as a guideline: http://www.innerbody.com/image/cardov.html

Group 3 & 4 - Circulatory System and the Lungs

1. Define the major organs and vessels that are involved with supplying blood flow to the llungs.
2. Explain how and why the pulmonary vein and pulmonary artery are different than any other vein and artery in the body.
3. Describe the passage of blood from the heart to the lungs, back to the heart, and out to the rest of the body.  4. Here is a link to help you out: http://www.exploringnature.org/db/detail.php?dbID=19&detID=3159

Group 5 & 6 - Digestive System

1. Define the major organs of the digestive system.
2. Describe the pathway that a piece of food take from the time that is consumed to the time that it exits the body.
3. This link should be of assistance: http://at.glenview34.org/webresources/science/cr_body_systems/digestive…

Groups 7 & 8 - Renal and Urinary Systems

1.  Define the major organs witin the Renal and Urinary System
2. Describe the pathway of non-alcoholic liquid once is has been consumed to the time that it leaves the body via micturition.

Evaluation

This assignment will be worth 18 total points per student.

Points Accuracy Presentation Partcipation
6 Points Information presented is antomically and physiologically accurate. Detailed, interesting presentation that is covers the assigned pathway. Exceptional participation and contribution from all members of the group.
4 Points  Informaton presented is somewhat detailed and anatomically and pysiologically accurate Somewhat detailed and interesting, but still cover the assigned pathway. Satisfactory participation by members of the group.
2 Points Information presented is minimally detailed and anatomically and physiologically accurate. Presentation is not detailed or interesting, and does not cover the assigned pathway. Minimal participation by members of the group.
Conclusion

The goal of this assignent is to get students to begin viewing the human body as a whole unit that functions together.  For example, instead of thinking of the stomach and small intestine seperately, students will consider how the stomach and small intestine work together to aid digestion.  It is easy to memorize the functon of the organs, but to apply the knowledge to the human body as a whole will show comprehension.  Hopefully, this assignemnt will be completed using only a notebook and textbook.
