Introduction
Welcome to
Task
Learning Challenges Task:
Let’s start out by viewing an animal that can be found in a pet shop and in the wild, a little hedgehog!
Isn’t it cute?!
Now work with a friend to discover all the things a hedgehog might think are yummy!
Some animals eat things similar to what we eat. Many animals eat things humans would never think of eating. What do you think hedgehogs eat?
Of course, animals may eat different foods if they are in captivity, kept as a pet or in a zoo, than if they are in the wild. Is the hedgehog an animal whose food changes in captivity?
There are some things animals can’t eat, like how dogs can’t have chocolate. It can hurt them. Do you think there is something hedgehogs shouldn’t eat?
So, think you have a good idea of what a hedgehog eats? What is something hedgehogs like to eat that can be sweet, sometimes red, and always round? Click here to watch and find out!
Compare notes with your friends. Do your animals have some foods in common?

Advanced Students Task:
Class, while there are many different kinds of animals, they all have a special way to fit into the food chain. You can start with something as small as grass.
Check this out it has so great info on how food chains really work.
Many people may not think that grass is a big part of a food chain, brain storm with your table partner on some things that might eat grass?
One thing that eats grass could be a grasshopper or other type of insect. Many people find insects annoying, but they play a huge role in making the food chain work effectively.
Again brainstorm with your table partner and come up with a few ways bugs help us. Once you have a few ideas check this out, I bet there are things you might not have thought of.
After watching this video, I want you to work with your table partner and come up with a diagram showing a different food chain not talked about today. After the diagram is created, you and your partner need to write a one page description of how your food chain works.

Keep in mind that you will use the pictures to create food chains, so think about the shots you are going to take
-
Now that you have the pictures, get help from a grown up and print them
-
The second part is also fun! Now you are going to take all your imagination and create a fun but informative cardboard to display later to your classmates.
-
Create a minimum or 2 food chains and a maximum of 4 with the pictures of animals that you took and printed before!
Good Luck and have fun!
Now that you built a stronger knowledge in the subject, chick on the following links to perform couple activities that are not only fun, but that will help you become more skilled!

Process
Part 1
Before beginning, review the food chain video with students to familiarize and establish prior knowledge about the topic
http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/ecosystems/food-chains.htm
Part 2
Extend the topic by exploring some food chain examples and explain students that all living organisms need energy to subsist, and that they get such energy from the food they eat. Plants obtain the energy from the sun
