Pre Advanced 2 - Writing Task 1

Introduction

You are going to right an e-mail or letter following the instructions that will follow to hand in to your Teacher.

Task

You are going to write an letter of complaint:

Imagine you have moved in to your new apartment, but as soon as you got there you realized there were lots of problems in it. Write an e-mail/letter to the landlord pointing out the problems in details and requiring a solution.

Although you are going to describe problems that you have had in the apartment, remember that the text should not be rude. You must point out your dissatisfaction in a formal and polite way.

Steps to write your letter/e-mail:

  1. Writer's address and Date (If you chose to write a letter)
  2. Greeting
  3. Identification of Complaint
  4. Justification of Complaint
  5. Request for action
  6. Closing
Process

Useful expressions to write a letter of Complaint:

Opening paragraph:

I am writing to complain about…..

I feel I must complain about……

I am writing to you in connection with…..

It was completely different from…..

I am dissatisfied with…..

Unfortunately, it was nothing like what I expected.

Expressions for middle paragraphs:

I must mention / point out …..

To make matters worse….

I was shocked / surprised / disappointed…..

As if that was not bad enough…

To my surprise / amazement…

Closing paragraph:

I demand a full refund / immediate action / a replacement.

I would be grateful if you dealt with this matter immediately.

I would appreciate if we could sort this matter out as soon as possible.

I am afraid that if this matter is not dealt with immediately, I will….

I look forward to hearing from you.

I hope to hear from you as soon as possible.
