8th grade literature Assignment

Introduction

This assignment is centered around eighth grade students in order for the students to gather and maintain fluency in reading and comprehension.  The goal is for the students to gain and master understanding of how a person can go through many challenges that are faced in life but also understand that where they live and how he or she lives in their home atmosphere can have an impact on the decisions that are made.

Task

Task one:Is for the students to read chapters one through ten of " I know why the caged bird sings".  The goal of this reading exercise is for the students to read the content and summarize the reading while  portraying themselves s Marguerite , the lead character in the story.

 Task two: Is for the students to choose the most difficult words in each of the ten chapters and define those words, which will allow them to have complete understanding of what has been read.

Task Three: Compare the current living situation ( student's) with Marguerite's living situation, determine the differences including location, environment, and the racial barriers if there are any.

 

This activity is for the students to be able to compare and contrast with no difficulty,  To have the ability to empathize with others in situations they cannot control, and to be able to understand what they are reading at the same time.

 

 

Process

The process for this assignment is to encourage the students to continue reading the assignment with no difficulty in understanding the material that has been presented.

The learning process is for the students to be able to visualize the living conditions that Marguerite experienced. 

The students will be asked to read aloud their favorite part of the assigned reading and summarize what they have read.

The students will be asked to define two of the words they have termed difficult from each chapter.

The students will be given an oral quiz based on the material that has been discussed in class about the reading material.

 

Evaluation

Each student will be given an assessment grade which will be in part graded on the content of their summary.

The student's class participation and quiz definition assessments will be included in their grade. 

The student that has shown the interest and understanding and has attempted to continue the reading will be given extra credit.

Conclusion

The conclusion of this exercise will be the complete understanding of the first ten chapters. 

The student will be given the option of continuing the reading for extra credit or for a complete book report on the end of the term.

Credits

The credits that will be given for this assignment will account for the majority of the students grade for the marking period.

The student that has read the assignment before this class, may be given the opportunity to do a class presentation depending on the manner in which the summary is presented.
