Introduction
Imagine yourself living in ancient times. Your life revolves around the cycles of the seasons- the rise and fall of the sun. Every natural phenomenon is shrouded with mystery. Imagine a world where a single being can bring about a good harvest, a victory in war, even your death.
Despite the fact that Ancient Egyptians and Greeks lived in different regions, and lived different life styles, they also had many things in common. One of those things was a belief that otherworldly beings controlled their lives. From the creation of the world, their birth through death, the gods and goddesses were both a positive and a negative influence over their society.
Here you will explore the religious life of both Egypt and Greece. You will discover the identities and attributes of their deities and learn how similar they are. Here you will imagine that you are the creator of the universe and will birth your own deities to rule your kingdom.
Task
In this webquest you will:
-
Create a powerpoint presentation with pictures and text identifing the major gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt and Greece.
-
Make a poster sized double-bubble map to compare and contrast the attributes of the major gods and goddesses.
-
Submit a word processed essay detailing the similarities between creation myths from each culture.
-
Using Voki, create your own god or goddess avatar to rule over an imaginary kingdom.
Process
Using the ipads or computer lab-
-
Using the links found under Egyptian and Greek Gods and Goddesses in the Teacher's Page, research Greek and Egyptian gods and goddesses. Keep a 3x5 note card with the name, physical description, and powers of the following gods and goddesses:
Zeus (Greek king of the gods), Poseidon (Greek god of the ocean), Apollo (Greek god of the sun), Hades (Greek god of the Underworld), Aphrodite (Greek goddess of love), Amun (Egyptian king of the gods), Nun (Egyptian god of the primal ocean), Ra (Egyptian god of the sun), Osiris (Egyptian god of the Underworld), Hathor (Egyptian goddess of love). -
Search for digital images depicting the gods/ goddesses above. Save these to a file on the desktop.
-
Using Powerpoint create a slide for every god/goddess above. The slides must contain: image, name, powers, and a description of the deities. Create a title slide (first) and a slide listing all the resources you used in your presentation (last slide). Extra credit for music in your slide show!
-
Using the information in your slide show create a large Double Bubble map on poster board showing the similarities and differences of one pair (Egyptian and Greek) of gods and goddesses'. attributes. Include illustrations.
-
Read through the creation myths saved on our delicious site. Write a three paragraph essay detailing the similarities you find in a myth from Egypt and Greece. The first paragraph should be an introduction saying why you chose these myths. The second paragraph should detail how the stories are similar. The last paragraph should state why you believe the ideas behind the creation of the world were so similar in such different cultures.
-
Starting on paper use your imagination to create your own god or goddess. Use your research to design your deity. Your god/ goddess needs to have a name, a physical description, special powers or abilities, and a symbol of power.
-
Using Voki, create your god/ goddess avatar. Be sure to include all the information above.
-
On presentation day, wear formal attire and be prepared to share your slide show, poster and avatar with the class.
