To type these characters above the person using the computer needs to do the following. First, close all programs being used, then restart the computer. For windows, go to the control panel then click on the keyboard panel, For keyboard layout choose US-International. When finished shut down the system, and restart the computer. On a Mac, this is what needs to be done. Open system preferences under the personal section is the international button. System preferences can be found by searching for it by clicking the magnifying glass symbol on the top right hand of the screen.
Click on the american flag picture then click on open international. Next, click on Input Menu, Then select a language then click on show keyboard viewer.
To type special characters this is what needs to be done.
