Cotton Trade in Memphis

Introduction

This WebQuest will count as both a Class Activity and Project grade. You will visit different websites and answer questions about the Cotton Trade in Memphis. Remember, "Project" grades make up 75% of your final grade. 

Task

To be prepared for this WebQuest, you and your partner must be researchers. You must answer the basic questions of what the Cotton Trade was like in Memphis through the following categories: The Plant and its History, Memphis and CottonThe Memphis Cotton Exchange, and The Decline of Cotton Row. There may be many correct answers to a question, so be prepared to answer using 3-4 sentences each. 

Process

Read all of the directions before you begin working. Answer the questions on the document Ms. Nelson has provided for you. Only answers on the paper handout will be graded.

Stop One: The Plant and its History

  • Questions to consider:
  1. What are the uses of cotton?
  2. What happened in 1793 that, "paved the way for the important place cotton holds in the world today"?

Stop Two: Memphis and Cotton 

  • Questions to consider: 
  1. What factors (events or circumstances) contributed to needing a cotton exchange? Why was a cotton exchange necessary?
  2. What makes Memphis a good location to exchange cotton?

Stop Three: The Memphis Cotton Exchange

  • Questions to consider: 
  1. What activities happened at The Memphis Cotton Exchange?
  2. Who was allowed to go into The Memphis Cotton Exchange?
  3. How would you have felt if you weren't allowed to be present while something you made was being sold? Do you think this would have created trust or anger between farmers and the people who sold their cotton? Why?

Stop Four: The Decline of Cotton Row

  • Questions to consider: 
  1. What caused downtown Memphis to become a "ghost town" in the 1980s according to this website?
Evaluation

Ms. Nelson will be checking that you did the following correctly:
